32 valve Lifters / tappets?
What brand of lifters/tappets is everyone using in their 32 valve engine builds? I have heard the new INA lifters are absolute crap and will not hold pressure after a few thousand miles. Is that true?

Where did you hear that?

When doing my searches on the subject. I was surprised to hear so many people saying the new INA lifters are not built to the same spec as the originals. There are quite a few threads where people chime in and do not recommend the new stock of lifters. Unfortunately, they are the only manufacture of them, so you can see the dilemma.

When I was changing the camshaft in my '05 Passat TDI, noticed that the lifter are the same dimension as the ones in the S4. I thin people already figured this out before me.

Cool thanks for the tip! The lifters for all 32 valve 928's are all the same, so if they work in a S4 they will work in my car. This is great news!

Dan, there is lots of reading here about VW lifters, that is the most common replacement. Try a search for "INA lifters" or similar.
The consensus is that none of the new lifters are as "good" as the originals, including new lifters from Porsche (in terms of hardness and lifetime). But the originals are ridiculously long-lived unless abused by the wrong oil, etc., so I am not sure that is an issue.
If you are changing cams then certainly replace the lifters, but if it is just a refresh and cams and lifters are smooth and shiny then consider reusing them (same location of course). It all depends on miles, type of use, and choice of oil.
And if it is time to replace them then call Roger for his advice and a quote.

Not all the lifters are the same. I compared 85-86 lifters and there were noticeable differences. I cannot explain if the differences matter, but they were different.

I'm having a heck of a time finding any posts about these VW lifters on here. The only post I have found that talks about VW lifters, is the one where Roger mentions he sales them and is running them in his GTS. Does anyone else have any first hand experience with these?

By "same" I mean interchangeable -- A GTS lifter can be used in a S3 and vice versa.

I did have mine down last week with 211k and the originals looked great.

Thanks Sean! How many miles do you have on the VW lifters so far? Is there any modifications that need to be done in order for them to work with our cars?

S3 on top 91 S4 below.

I'm not running them in my car yet as I've not had to take the cams out. Whenever I end up doing so then I'll put them in. I'd have to make some phone calls to find out what the miles are on the ones I've installed but that would be kinda pointless as i'd not know what the installed ones look like. I'm sure if the owners felt there were issues (noise) i'd be the first one to hear about it.

Kevin, the early lifter is almost identical to the VW part. Thanks for the picture.

There's nothing wrong with current INA lifters.
If you build a proper engine, you will not have a problem.
