I think he means that the engine started puking oil from the valve cover breathers.

Yes, sorry. Will engage in less anthropomorphizing.

Rob, Where does the blue line from the crank plate go - oil filler?

Alan- Yes, oil filler. I think it's likely to be the world's most overbuilt oil filler neck- kevlar oil hose, anodized Wiggins clamp, and a GB handcrafted filler cap. Couple of hours of labor on it, too.

In my new daily driver, they are interestingly doing the crankcase venting failry similarly to what we're doing and/or planning to do with the turbo 928. The daily driver does have the benefit of a centrifugal separator in the head, though, which causes us much envy:

Venting primarily downstream of the throttle plate at part throttle and no boost. Check.
Venting upstream of the turbo at boost and at full throttle. Check.
Separate venting and ventilation mechanism, which sucks in fresh air at low load and vents out crankcase gasses at full load. Check.
A centrifugal air oil separator. Missing!

Wonder what would have happened if you would have run the engine with the oil filler cap open? I know it's an expensive engine and you probably don't want to run many experiments in which oil pressure dips. Still, one might wonder if the additional breather capacity from the block valley would have made a difference.

We are planning to go back to the engine dyno to play with oiling, scavenging and dry sumping with the next Zombie motor. Life seems to get in the way more than it did in the 'slow' period of 2009-2012, so I'm not sure when it will happen, but I have a bachelor week mid- April to do as much prep work as I can for the short block.

is the wiggins clamp just to secure the cap - or do you plan to attach it to something else?

So is this centrifugal separator built into the head/cover casting? or a separate item attached? Just on one side though it seems - with a different (labarinth baffle?) separator on the other side...? Assume the centrifugal is quite small & higher velocity vs a Provent and likely without a removable filter? Low oil consumption with this set-up?

I have no idea how it works or what it's made of. I've opened the hood once to verify I could count two turbos and am not planning to open it again unless the diagnostics computer tells me to! ;-) That said, I assume that it's a rotor running in the end the camshaft what throws the oil down to the pan and lets the air out from the center. But that's an assumption. This document contains literally everything I know about how the system works: http://cqxsdas.gicp.net/SDmedia20100...001_002_en.pdf

I still look at that engine and all the original work that Greg did and take a deep breathe and say .......
"SarahJane!!!!!!" old joke but funny none the less

I bet many people have moved from all the time but no money in 2009 to all the money but no time in 2014...

Here's one question that would have been very interesting to figure out at the time. In that Andy-GTS engine as tested in your video, was the air flowing in or out of the venting hose attached to the block chimney, or not at all? If it was flowing out, just a bigger hose might have helped. If it was not flowing, then there was possibly an oil plug in there. A bigger hose and different baffling might have helped. If it was flowing in, then the whole crankcase breather system would have to be thought over, as it would indicate that the chimney is in a low pressure zone.

Cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-Ching! (cash register sound )

But worth every penny.

Okay, thanks for indulging in that little bit of silliness and reaffirming my faith that RL still has a sense of humor.

Back to regular programming......
