I bought it like that, the car has a wide body kit on it as well, and if you look carefully there is no rubber strip between the back cover and the body. The whole car is high gloss black. No one knows ( or admits to) having done the work, and the car was always in So California.

The S4+ hatch has relief dimples on the underside of the edges so there are flat areas for wing hold-down bolts to seat correctly. Some pre-S4 owners try and drill the holes from the bottom and end up with them too far apart (lateral on the hatch) to mate correctly with the wing. Were I doing this mod, I'd probably a) get one of the adjustable retrofit wings from a local owner here in Hollywood area, with the sliding/reinforced nuts inserted, or b) drill the correct holes in the hatch from the top, then bigger holes through the inside metal only, enough to pass washers and socket cap screws through in the correct location for the factory S4+ wing if that's what I'm mounting.
The original S rubber spoiler has a distinctive look, but it's also associated with rust issues where it mounts to the hatch, and more so with the mounting at the bottom of the rear quarter windows. If you are repainting the car, the rubber comes off, the rusted metal is replaced, and a new non-spoiler window rubber is fitted. The holes have to be welded and filled regardless, so the total effort is usually beyond the casual DIY capability most have.
I like the original shaved-and-bald look of the pre-S cars. All but a few of the S-spoilered cars I've seen around here are suffering from rubber deterioration. The front S spoiler is virtually always damaged and repaired, since it sits so conveniently at parking-bumper height. I like the look when the pieces are correctly maintained. Shabby and broken, not so much.
Taste is a very variable commodity, so your mileage and opinion may vary. The original S4 wing will probably stay on my car as long as I own it.

IMHO having both the S lip and S4 wing looks ridiculous. (in a bad way!)
When I had my Euro S, I converted the rear to the smooth look, I swapped the hatch, rear quarter window seals and windows from an early car, and added an S4 wing. I thought it looked cool at the time but now I think even this looks out of place.
On an S model the rear quarter seals are molded to the lip shape and will look awkward if you just remove the rubber lip pieces.

[QUOTE=The Forgotten On;10652883]Just go for the early look by getting a early rear hatch. Heck, this will even give you the chance to eliminate the rear wiper without plugs. I like my 81 without its wing. Less weight to slow it down
I removed my rubber wing because it had caused corrosion to begin under it, keep it dry btwn it and hatch with compressed air after washing you car.
I agree it is super heavy but looks ok, very 80s. My Father in Law said is was one of the first that he can remember on a production car.
A month after repainting/removing the wiper mechanism to shed more weight we stopped for lunch, finished and got in to back out. I couldn't see a thing behind me the hatch glass had mist covering it. I got a laugh out of that, had to be there.
