More power for 928 S4 ?
Hello guys,
I got a 88 928 S4 which I want to unleash more power out of and make it faster, what performance modifications do you recommend.
Def going to get a SuperSprint exhaust for sound nice burble, what headers do you recommend ? I want a European V8 sound and not the Muscle car sound I listened to some 928's on youtube.
Is their a kit I can make the car to 5.4L ?
Supercharging whats the best kit ?
I dont want to stress the engine and I want reliable OEM quality work with more power.

the best way to improve the performance of a 928 is to make sure its running 100%....there are lots of little electrical things that can fail and cause HUGE drops in performance...
Once its running 100%...the next best is a full exhaust.....headers into dual 2.5" works nice for street cars and a nice performance gain too....
After than its cams......or depending on your budget a stroker.....how does 6.4L sound.... Since you want reliable-OEM quality....stroker is the way to go.....

Yes, Kuwait is a long way....however my stroker engines have proved to be virtually bullet-proof and are running all over the world. People ship me their vehicles from the far corners and we install, test, and tune. Or the engines can be dyno tested here, sent with chips that will be close, and shipped for installation. Do the installation there.
I'm completely rebuilding an engine that was involved in a front end "crash", which damaged the block beyond use. New (freshly Nicolsil coated) block and all new bearings, rings, and all current "upgrades". Will come with my custom stainless header/exhaust system, upgraded A/C system, new radiator, upgraded oil cooling system, fuel pump system, flex plate clamp. Dyno tested, broken in, and ready to go.
Plug and play, with no danger of the "horror" stories we've heard about the "other" stroker engine builders, over the years.
40K...which is 25-30K under current build costs, with all of those options.
Fantastic deal for this virtually perfect 928 upgrade, from the company with the perfect reputation.

If you can work with Greg Brown, you will work with arguably the most knowledgable individual regarding the 928 high performance. His shop's work is along the same line.

I think that at $10k the most cost effective hp come from a supercharger. A centrifugal supercharger kit is going to blow the doors of a typical "cams and headers" car, and usually with better reliability since the engine doesn't need to be opened during the install and doesn't have to be run at high revs during operations. I would go with Tim Murphy's kit because it has the largest installed base.
At $20k, the most cost effective hp come from a turbo system. What was on my car as of two months ago could be replicated at under $20k and would give about 650 rwhp reliably. Reliably enough that within days of the install I drove the car for 1000 miles with just refueling stops -- it's not just that there were no problems whatsoever but more importantly I was able to rely on there being no problems.
If you have California-style visual inspections, then internal engine modifications are the best way to go since our 928's don't have CARB approved forced induction kits. Greg Brown who posted earlier in this thread has a great reputation in building reliable cars that are "factory appearing" yet go faster.

I wish I had some way to get a ride in your car Brett. I think the SC is the way to go for a lot of use but I am still thinking about putting a 50 shot at WOT to go along with my SC setup. I would want an arming switch so I could choose when to use it. That comes after the clutch gets updated though.

With a modern electronic controller (like my Maxx Extreme Race) you control exactly when and at which revs your Nitrous comes on and at which revs it goes off...plus a normal arming switch as well.... dont forget mine is my daily driver.... every day for the last 8 years now....
If you TRY Nitrous first...you wont bother buying a blower....
All the best Brett

Go with twin turbo's. $ 15k including complete engine refresh if you like to do the work yourself. 500 HP at 9 psi. 650 at 14 psi, if you want. I settled for 9 psi.
You have a better torque curve than a supercharger.
I have driven the car approx 10,000 miles since I installed John Kuhn's system.
Have had zero issues sofar. The car is a blast.
Trying to upload a couple of pictures. Hope that works
