Considering a move from 997S to a 928

i understand the comments about the 997S running circles around a 928 and i agree with those statements. that's not the focus though; my 928 never bored me and it certainly always drew a fair amount of attention. it was fun to own. i've owned some great cars and the 997S is a great car, but it's just not thrilling me on a daily basis. one problem, as mentioned, is having to drive it at something like 4/10s just to stay safe. the car is crazy quick, but you're at unsafe speeds in a blink. i realize the 928 isn't a pig in comparison, but it might be more involving and i still love the design - it's an absolute classic in my opinion. the '78 928 must have been like seeing a '67 miura in it's day. not that i have to stand out, but it's fun to have an interesting car - a bmw 2002 would be great example. the car's character is more important than absolute performance, but performance has to be represented. i'll have to find a few examples and take them for a spin to see if they still interest me. i drove an e39 M5 today, considering that as an option also, and came away thinking how quick, precise and very nice my 997S is. ;-) i realize they're night and day, to an extent, but it's a car on my 'must own' list and i am a big fan of sport sedans also. i was very aware of the M5's mass while drawing it. who knows, the 928 might not 'wow' me at this point either. we'll see.

IMO it would be extremely difficult not to be disappointed with the power when you are used to a 997. How mechanically inclined are you? Maybe a supercharged 928 is right for you. Mine has been my daily driver for over 5 years now. You wouldn't know it's supercharged unless you look under the hood.

Quite capable around cars and my dad has a bitchin' set of tools. I know I was disappointed somewhat by the M5 this weekend and the power:weight on the M5 is better than the power:weight on a 928, obviously. The power is important, to some degree, but not the main concern. I was impressed by how quick my 997 was this morning though, in comparison. It is extremely responsive to throttle input, while the M5 was a bit lazier and the mass didn't help. It will clearly be an adjustment to lost power AND gained weight, but I rarely get to exploit the 997's power anyway - which is why I'm pissed I missed my June track event with a snapped shifter cable. I could finally run that car hard at the track and see just what it's capable of. Need to drive a 928 again and see the impressions are.

I can understand this - I've driven a 997 w/PDK for a nice mountain road drive and it's a fantastic car... but at that price point I wouldn't buy it over other choices.
Have you considered a 993? An S might provide what you want - for me, a TT is a future must-own.

Since you're in Texas, I'd try and visit Roger and 928 RUS. Best guy to get in touch with about 928s there and maybe see if you can drive one around to get a feel for it.
My early '86 is a beast to drive despite her still being far from complete. I'm constantly impressed about how better she feels with every tune I make, maintenance issue I complete and part I (break and) replace. I've had the pleasure of being in the passenger seat of Fraggle's sorted '87 and damn it is a very thrilling car.
My dad has an 997.1 C4 manual and yes, it is a very quick very nimble awesome sounding and exciting car as well. The 911 will always be an impressive machine but there's different types of thrills to each.

I have considered a 993, yes. Actually, that's where this whole thing started. It was going to be either a 964 or 993, but the prices are such that you're paying a premium for those cars now - even the 964s. I would love a WB 993, but they're practically bringing Turbo money now. I decided to scale it back and consider the e39 M5 and the 928 and here I am. What I like about all the choices above, it that they are somewhat to quite unique.

Thanks. I have seen 928rus mentioned around on the boards and such, but I didn't realize they were in TX. Of course, they could be in TX and still be a day's drive away.

I don't consider a 928 to be a realistic daily driver. Try early VW bug. -plenty of back seat room and the kids will love it.
BB, 79 5sp that rarely gets taken out. 62 VW waiting for me to get back to it. (love that car)

Looking for some wisdom from the group. I'm a previous '78 928 owner back in the day and I'm currently driving a 997.1 C2S that is just not exciting me enough (previous '93 RSA, '67 911 and '72 914 - first car). I'm considering a few cars, but near the top of the list is the 928. Parts availability, pricing, and finding a 5 speed car concern me. With the relatively cheap 'buy in', I can live with the higher parts prices, but I am considering this as a DD. I have a short commute and I'm not overly concerned about it being a daily driver. I've done the typical mods on my 997 - X51 headers, 200 cell cats, Tubi mufflers, Evo intake, Eibachs, HREs, SSK and would like to do similar mods to a 928.
I'm probably looking at either a late 928.1 or an early-ish 928.2 car. Is there a better model/engine to start with from a mods point of view - more potential for power? I also have a 3 y/o daughter and will need to be able to put a child seat in the back. For anyone who has done it, what's the best seat to use for the given space and are there any drawbacks? The center console tends to create a tight space in the rear seats. Also, living in TX, I must have very good A/C for myself and my daughter. Any improvements in the A/C systems at any given point?
Back to mods:
Wheels - what are the best late-model Porsche wheels for the 928s. I will definitely want to fill those rear wheels well with rubber and proper offset.
Exhaust - would want headers, high-flow cats and a great sound. What is the typical upgrade in this area? I see the X-pipe crossovers and MSDS headers - are these considered the best options?
Tuning - is ECU tuning worth the effort? Best choice?
Besides Rennlist and 6speedonline, what are the best locations to look to find a car? I'm aware of cars.com, autotraderclassics.com, but are there places to find good 928s? I know Pelican has some classifieds also. I know a manual car will be hard to find, but it's the only trans I'm interested in.
Any thoughts on any of these subjects would be greatly appreciated.
Love the 928 and look forward to being a contributor here in the near future, assuming everything works out and I can find the car I want - after getting the money I want for my 997S.
Thanks everybody.

He's absolutely thrilled and claims that his "new" automatic 928 is way more comfortable and probably faster than his GT-3....plus the registration and insurance are considerably less.
