Going to look at a '85 5-speed...
This is on sale locally :
http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAd?A...gA6YfEaXBiw2c*
Got this reply to my first email this morning :
"The car is for my cousin. It's been parked last winter and has not been driven since.
He's selling it as is. If still interested, let me know and I'll see if he's available today to see it.
Regards,"
...anything in particular to look for in this year? I do like the phonedials and 5-speed. Pictures look nice... none of the interior though, and I am a bit wary of the "as is" remark since used cars between individuals are always as-is. The price is a bit high for my budget... but depending on outstanding issues and maintenance could be realistic IMHO.
Hope to be able to see it today.

front bumper cover in the middle bottom shows something not right going on there. Also, wiper not parking properly. The phone dials are not period correct for the car, but they do look good. The color looks good (respray?), also no rub strips or sunroof - two plusses for many folks (I like sunroofs). No pics of the interior or the engine bay, so hard to judge from that.
Considering it is an interference engine, you will want to know the timing belt history - when was it last changed? This is critical for a US/Canada spec 85 and up 928. I would also want to see more than that in serivce history for the price.

Great reply Ed.
Could you give me some tips on a 78-79 car. I am looking to buy and would like to know what to look for. I have had numerous 911 and 944, but never a 928 - it will be serving as a daily driver.
What to chose - 5 speed or auto? Normally I don´t like autos.
Congrats on the 5000 posts

Ha nice catch - didn't even notice where I was on the count!
Anyway, I love the earlier cars for ease of working on them - much simpler. I've had an 84 and an 86 (which is just like the 85 posted about above). Also, I like the cleaner look of the early cars with no spoilers. They do not have the power of the later cars, like the 5 litre car you are looking at. But they are still very powerful and fast compared to any other p-car of the same year (except for 930 turbos).
You can get a good example early model for less than a good example later model, and I think the earliest good examples will start to appreciate in value farily soon (WARNING - don't buy one of these puppies for the investment value).
In terms of what to look for, look for a car with a well documented service history, and one with no accidents (or at least no frame bending ones). There are less rubber bits on the early cars, but feel the peices and see if it is still supple. Cars from the south. especially FL, tend to have rubber baked like glass - horrible stuff, and it all has to be replaced.
Lastly, when you find a 928 you like, get a 928 experienced owner to go with you to look at it. They are alot different compared to the 911s and even the 944s. Good luck on your search.

'85 5-speed, no sunroof, no rubs, no spoilers, no rear wiper(?), no HL squirters, phone dials?
OMG, awesome. Want.
It's not a typo? Is it really an '85? It's optioned like an '80.
If it is an '85, it's a sleeper. Looks like a '80, but will go like a GT.
That '85 will be easily be the fastest 928 you can buy (for CAN$6000) after refreshing and chipping (X-pipe).

Was able to see the car and (surprise!) it is not as the ad would make it seem.
1) Hilton seems to have something, it is an '85 (manufactured 02/85) but it is a 16 valve... I was a bit surprised when the hood was popped. Did Porsche continue making "1984" specs into 1985 till the parts were used up?
2) The pictures are from a happier time, certainly not this year, perhaps when the seller bought it 5 years ago. The car has been outside for a couple of months, has not run since last year and has not been washed, tires are a bit low and it looks generally sad. It will need paint, bubbling around windows here and there and there is a minor scratch on the right side of the front bumper. I was told that the hatch is not original, has been poorly repainted and has a couple of bare spots above the window.
3) I was told that the fuel pump is bad... they (I met the seller's cousin and a friend who is a bit more mechanically knowledgeable that the seller and his cousin) have not been able to start it. They tried while I was there and it turns over happily but didn't even pretend that it wanted to start.
4) The interior is in what I would call good original condition, the leather is cracking but no tears or opened seams.
There is no spoiler... myself I like spoilers, sunroofs and rub strips.
They have some invoices for work done... somewhere. Brakes and fuel tank repair were 2 things that they mentioned. They don't think the timing belt has been done in the last 5 years, but will check the invoices.
Apparently the seller wants it to go away without putting more time and money in it.
So I'm going to think about it... an '84 5-speed has been at the top of my list and I am looking for a project, which this is. It would be worth $3000 to $4000 to me if there are no more surprises... and if it really is the fuel pump.

you better get an engine code,
its under the top radiator hose about 4 inches forward of the water bridge hose clamp and 10 inches down

Get engine number and VIN.
Something isn't adding up.
I have an 85 factory spoiler delete car, so that is not out of the question.
16V is potentially wrong, unless its a twin dizzy. In that case, the fenders are wrong.

yep; that's what I'm thinking - a Euro that has been smashed and rebuilt.

Could be a lot of things but probably not fuel pump.
Very likely the Crank Position Sensor (or it's plug) is bad.

I will try to swing by and get the VIN today, but I will not have access to the interior of the car. Are there any other external (or visible from the exterior) indicators that I should look for? I do have a picture of the rear... no Euro fog light. For the date of manufacture I definitely did see 02/85 on the plate on the driver's door pillar.

The seats "look" like 84 and earlier seats. 85 and up should have different seats, without the groove below the headrest - one clue. VIN should be informative; picture of the engine even better.
I lifted some pictures from Classic 9 website to illustrate the differences.

Wondering about the phonedials. Weren't they available in '85? I have an '85 with 16" phonedials, I am pretty sure it's bone stock.
