New Rear Shift Coupler Won't Fit
Very strange, I bought a new Rear Shift Coupler (928 424 029 00) after breaking my original, and the hole that the shift shaft from the tranny goes into was too small. I returned it and bought a 2nd one, and it was also too small. I searched RL but can't find anyone that has ever had this problem before. Also, the hole that the set screw goes into is 90 degrees off from the original on both, which may not be a problem. (There are two holes on both old and new 90 degrees from each other but only one is tapped)
The hole in the new part is about 1mm smaller than the old part. I can understand that the old part may have some wear making the hole larger, but the new part won't go on the shaft. Anyone know what might be going on? Here's some pics of both old and new. http://209.160.1.100/photos/WP_20130612_004.jpg http://209.160.1.100/photos/WP_20130612_006.jpg http://209.160.1.100/photos/WP_20130612_007.jpg |
Can't say I've ever say I've seen that. Odd.

Are you sure you didn't get a 911 coupler in error 2x? I think they had the set screw threaded hole 90 degrees different than for the 928. Just a guess.
|
Where did you order it from? I ordered one a month or so back, and like you the hole was about 1mm off, and the wrong threads were tapped. As BRB mentioned, it is most likely the coupler from a 911.

We had this problem a couple of years ago and found there was a large batch of bad parts out there that were aftermarket - Hamburg Technic if I remember correctly. Our wholesaler changed the supplier and not had a problem since. I still have the details in my notes - shaft diameter needs to be 16.2mm. Correct part number is 928 424 029 00.

Hamburg Technic = China

I got the wrong, 911 coupler from Automobile Atlanta. Didn't realize it for 6 months and they wouldn't take it back.

Roger, thanks for the information. That is just what I expected to find out, a batch of bad parts, and also not surprised to hear they are probably from China. I'll send you an email requesting the correct part. Both parts had the correct 928 part# on the box. I don't want to name vendors here, but I will say that the first part came from an unknown source selling on Amazon and was an awesome deal, or so I thought. The 2nd part came from a trusted and well-known 928 parts supplier. I will be getting back to both of them.

Correct part with the right size hole on its way today.
When it happened to me I had the same issues and had to replace a few before we got it right. |
Roger, got the new part and installed today. It fits perfectly. Thanks for coming through with the right part and shipping it quickly.
I'll go ahead and say that one of the wrong parts came from Pelican. I spoke to them and they didn't seem overly concerned but said they would research it. I have not heard back from them. I also spoke to the distributor that the Pelican part likely came from and they didn't want to say it was from China, but I now think it was since the box didn't say made in Germany anywhere on it, as Roger's does. The box had a lot of text that made it look German, but I'm thinking both were from China. The distributor did seem very concerned and said they would research it and pull the parts after confirming my complaints. |
Don,
Was the coupler you got from Hamburg Technic? Did some checking and the company has nothing to do with Hamburg Germany and has no presence there. They do have a storefront presence in Wiesbaden (which I guess is the basis for the claim that they sell German parts) - in a building with a shoe store, office supply co., and a couple of credit reporting agencies. Wiesbaden is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Hamburg. Parent company is Eurostar Industies owned by an indian guy named Rohan Virmani in Norwalk, CT. Also operates as Deutsche Parts USA LLC with the corporate office located in an apartment in NYC. The "OEM" parts they sell are knock off crap made in India and China. Yes, Hamburg Technic is fairly well known as a "Made in China" brand that tries to look and sound German.
Neither of the parts that didn't fit said Hamburg Technic on them or on the boxes. The boxes didn't say where they were made either. Roger's part said "Made in Germany" on the box. The guy I talked to at one of the distributors said that occasionally Porsche even changes to cheap suppliers from China and they have issues with the parts, not sure if that is correct or not. |
