Default Manual transmissions centers between 4th and 5th

Hi Guys,

I recently completed a manual transmission swap from an older G28.03 to an 1986 G28.10 in my Euro 928S. Everything is in and working fine, I am able to select all gears without trouble. However the shift lever is centering above 4th and 5th gears when in neutral, rather than between 2nd and 3rd. It did not do this on my older box.

I am guessing this is not normal for this generation of transmission? I have tried undoing the shift linkage and rotating the spline but have not obtained the desired effect. I am guessing there are springs inside the gear box, as well as the compression springs on the shift mechanism, that influence when the shift lever locates?

ps. First post in 928 forums...but long time lurker!

to adjust the centering you need a helper to hold the shifter in the desired location/

Then you would get under the car and loosen the 13mm bolt that clamps the splines into the shift tube ,
once this is done then the splines should be able to be moved,
if not the remove the splined shaft from the tube and turn it some to the desired effect then tighten the bolt.

NOTE this adjustment is done with the transmission in neutral

Please disregard Stan's advice above.

I believe that the G28.10 is meant to center in the 4/5 plain.
If there is resistance going over into the 1/R plain then this is how it is to behave.
If there is no resistance in the 1/R plain then the centering spring inside the transmission is broken. To replace the box must be removed.

Thanks guys. Yes I have resistance going to the 1/R plane. Quite a lot in fact, definitely more than was in the G28.03 box.

Seems odd that Porsche chose to center the G28.10 on the 4/5 plane. Its certainly not undriveable, but you do need to be aware when going from 1st to 2nd and it wants to jump to 4th instead.

I just did a similar swap this winter.
Based on the mixed set of responses, I went outside and tried it.
My 86.5 trans centers in 2/3 plane.
There is relatively strong resistance to move the shifter to R/1 plane.
And some, though much less, to move the shifter to the 4/5 plane.
In either case, it returns to 2/3

This is done by an internal spring. So if you have resistance going into the 1/R plane then the spring is working (not broken).

Thanks for correcting me Colin, after rereading the WSM,
the shifter should be off to the right of straight up by 2 to 3 degrees,
this is done after you have loosened the 13mm bolt and turned the shift coupler to the stop towards the driverside of the car.
( looking at the coupler from the front of the car towards the back,
the coupler is turned CW to its stop that would be the spring)

Then the shifter is positioned then the bolt is tightened

Early G28/10 and G28/11 center to 4-5 plane simply because they use different spring design. Where shift lever points to when its in neutral is different thing and can be adjusted outside gearbox. Factory instruction for 2-3 degrees towards driver and rear is good setup for most drivers.

Thanks guys, lots of good information. I will have another shot of adjusting according to Stan's instructions and see how I get on.
