door mirror removal

I need to remove the mirror on the passenger side of my '89 S4. What is the simplest way to do this? DId a quick search, and didn't come up with anything. The wiring system needs to be repaired.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Gary--

(hoping I don't need to put my stubby fat fingers up in some small place inside the door - ha!!).

Turn the mirror all the way forward to reveal an allen bolt.

You'll find everything here.
Starting page 4.

Not precisely on point, but a relevant place to reference a useful page:

Is a pan head screw or a Torx.

^^^^^^^^
That isn't the right bolt.
M5X45 Cheese head (Allen) is the correct fastener here.

Well maybe it's not.
I'm going to let sleeping dogs lie on this one

+1.
I remember when I did the Mirror conversion on mine that it was an Allen bolt.

I remember them being Allen bolts on the S4 and just checked the GTS (moved the mirror) and yes its an Allen head bolt.

Does the inner door have to be removed to change out the mirrors from flags to Aeros on an 87 S4? I would have assumed so, but sounds like maybe not.

No.
Everything's done from the outside.

82 Euro -- Flag Style

My drivers side looks like it got busted up by PO and they used electrical tape to rebuild the inner core
to hold the mirror in place ---

is there a way to rebuild it properly or do I need a new one?

thanks,

Mike

And in the "I continue to be somewhat stupid" category I removed the driver's side mirror to see if I could get to the plug (can't) and realized I cracked the paint around the base of the rubber gasket. Ug, fortunately I was planning on repainting this door anyway, looks like I will be taking it completely apart in the spring for a complete repaint/rebuild.

But they will need the car to match it, so it's a pain anyway. Ug.
