Jalopnik 928 Coverage!

Thanks for all the kind words!
Even after 3 days of modest driving in the NYC area, I'm utterly in love with this car.
Here's a quick question for you:
Yesterday, under mild acceleration, the three following things happened simultaneously:
1) ABS off warning
2) Diff off warning
3) Speedometer stopped working.
Ideas?
Best,
Alex

These folks trot the story out - yet usually have no first hand knowledge of anything 928 related, no real data, no real idea - may well have never seen one in the flesh - but they know they are right... (?!)
If you maintain it right - it will last forever...
To your issue - likely an issues with one of the ABS senders - sometimes these faults are intermittent, if yours isn't it should be easy to diagnose. Diagnostic tester (Bosch hammer etc) can help.

Well, hopefully this diff control warning/speedo issue is a simple thing, it can be kind of a PITA nusiance. At least you can tell the cop truthfully, 'No officer, I don't know how fast I was going....'
There are a couple of combinations of DIFF CONTROL OFF, +/- ABS OFF, +/- speedometer loss symptoms, the combination of which depends on the location of the problem. With the loss of the speedo function, for a '91 the speedometer signal comes from the ABS sensor in the front left hub. So this could be anything from a dirty left front ABS sensor, to a break in the ABS/PSD harness somewhere, to a dead/dying ABS relay in the CE panel, a blown fuse (#28 for a '91), dirt or crap in the accelerometer under the driver's seat, dirty contacts on the 55 pin connector at the ABS brain (in the driver's footwell above the dead pedal), a funky Relay XIX, and probably other causes I'm not parroting from the thread linked below.....
Agree with Alan that pulling codes may reveal an obvious sensor fault.

You've chosen well, particularly buying one from someone fanatical about upkeep. It's way easier to keep a nice example nice than trying to recover from a lot of missed opportunities in the car's history. Seller's name Leonard L. by chance? It looks/sounds like his car and his fanaticism.
There's a great support group here for almost anything you might need or want to know about the car. The 928 Owner's Club area rep is Michael Rubin ( RL: Mickster) who started this thread about your car and the Jalopnik posting. The group there has some pretty interesting-sounding events and gatherings.
There's a spring gathering in North Carolina called Sharks in the Mountains (SITM) sponsored by one of our long-time parts suppliers. Get to know many of the enthusiasts from the eastern half of the country, with some from the farther reaches. But being there isn't any more important than getting there, so you'd be somewhat obligated to go on the Blue Ridge Parkway tour to get there. Look for the Sharks in the Mountain thread, and plan a weekend vacation early in June.
Again, Welcome!
