clear window film on inside of windshield.... heard of it?

If you are removing the PU sheet (layer #4) you are effectively taking apart your "windshield" which is not good. If you are removing the "intermediate sheet" a bad name for the last layer (layer #5) then that is ok. My guess is you are pulling on layer 4 as not many euro's have the intermediate (layer #5). But only you can know that. My advice stays the same, get a new windshield.

My 85 Euro has the same plastic inner film. It is horribly scratched. If you scrape it off, let me know how you fare. I'd love to scrape mine off as well. Another windshield may be in my future.

That seems odd, my impression has been that this type of Sekuriflex windshield was not DOT approved and would not be on a USA delivered vehicle, so how would it get on a an 87 S4? Is yours grey?

mine too, I believe the 5th layer probably stayed in Germany on most of these and what we are seeing is the ham-fisted work of grease monkeys on the 4th layer, unfortunately.

[QUOTE=tv;10389583]There are actually 5 layers for perfect function the 5th being a surface that was made for stickers and the like.[QUOTE]
This 5th layer was quite obviously never used on my car, as the area where inspection stickers go was scraped and gouged. I bought my car from the original importing owner, so I suspect that piece never made it, or it was unknown what it was for. I imaging that this was not a full size layer, but probably more of a smaller section to be cut to size and placed where one would be applying stickers.
My original windshield broke 2 years ago, and I replaced it with a "normal" windshield. The improvement in clarity was remarkable.

Wow. Perfect timing.
I have a very old inspection sticker on the inside of my windshield and removing it was on my "To Do" list this week. I hadn't gotten there yet when this showed up. I was just going to scrape it off with a razor blade. Very glad I didn't.
I have it too. There's a little inscription (mostly in German) about a "special coating" and to consult the Owner's Manual before cleaning.
Mine is in pretty good shape. There's a bad spot where the sticker is, I thought it was just the old adhesive, but I now think it's the coating that's wrecked. There's another couple of spots near the bottom in the center, looks like suction cups were there. And there's a "swipe" upper left, looks like someone "cleaned" a spot off of it and scratched the coating. Nothing I can't live with, and now I know what I have.
Thanks!!

It's like we are wearing coke bottle glasses, looking thru all these old layers of glass and plastic. I imagine a nice new modern windshield would be a great improvement.

My EURO85 car has the inside plastic, but it is in really good shape. Never use a sharp object like a razor on it though. I carefully peel up a corner of a sticker with my fingernail and then slowly work it off. It will STILL leave a BIG MESS for you. I have found that Goo Gone works fine and leaves no marks. Use it with a soft cloth or soft strong paper towel. It will take quite a bit of elbow grease to get all the residue off. If you have to put another sticker on use some clear plastic of some kind to cover the vast majority of the sticker so only the edges are actually stuck to your plastic windshield liner. It will make the next time MUCH easier. Might even leave an "ear" free for help taking the next one off too...

they actually had special protective stickers which you were to put on the inside BEFORE adding any normal registration/ parking stickers...so they would be removable without damage !
