Default Took off bumper on 87, those last impossible to access bolts...

Long story short i took mine off since it needs repainting anyways, i need to to finish R&R'ing the windshield/headlight washer system, and it gives a bit more clearance when putting the motor back in.

But anyways, who else invented previously unheard curse words when they were trying to remove the last and farthest bolt in the fender?? The one right in front of the headlamp/headlamp bar.

You probably know this already, but those nuts are easy to remove once the entire headlight assembly has been taken out, Unfortunately, replacing the bolts that hold the plastic bearing that the headlight bar rotates on is not much fun either....

Good luck,

Bob

I have always thought the front bumper it attached to both fenders and THEN bolted to the body. Can be removed as one unit too but its a 2 man job.

8 mm gearwrench is your friend for those bolts.

I am doing a bumper cover removal this weekend but I have to say that last time I did the job I do not remember it being real difficult. I will update this weekend how it goes this time. I do have gear wrenches so maybe that helped. If you don't have gear wrenches you need to get some before you work on anything else. I have both long and stubby. Best thing since sliced bread.

That'd make sense. I'd like to have the assembly instructions for the car.

As soon as the salt is gone off the roads, which could be a while as winter will NOT let go, I will be prepping mine for paint. So please keep this thread alive. I'm not looking forward to the front and back bumper covers .

Dean I think you're right on this. I've thought the same thing as well.

Early pictures of the assembly line clearly show several guys carrying those parts along by hand, and other bits of the car being bolted to them as they walked along. Pretty soon the whole rest of the car was attached, piece by piece.

----

There are more than a few bolts on cars that cause me to scratch my head and wonder what the designers were thinking. Then it hits me -- these cars were meant to be driven, not worked on. Plus, the affluent buyers need not worry about such mundane challenges such as these bolts. All of their maintenance was done at dealership repair facilities staffed by factory-trained expert technicians.

Well... i was cursing and yelling "I F'ING HATE PORSCHE ENGINEERS!!!!" with a passion you could only dream of. I kept getting angry and whenever i get frustrated/angry i break stuff. So before i could break stuff, i kept feeling the fenders and thinking... holy **** these are so thin and light. Almost feel like plastic, and if i break something, it won't be good. So i took a few deep breath breaks, and kept working at it. The passenger side was impossible to remove, and the studs wouldn't just break off like the rest of them did (from being rusted), so i ended up removing the bumper just enough to get enough space to slide a hack saw blade between bumper and fender. Slowly but surely i eventually sawed the stud off, with no damage to the fender or bumper.

But, in the back of my mind i kept saying to myself, this is the price you pay for this beautifully designed car. I know we all curse this stuff, but every car has this kind of bull****. Try working on a GMC utility van, the heads are literally beside your feet when you're sitting in it once you get the engine "tunnel" cover off, imagine doing spark plugs on it. I did it though... the feeling after is probably the most gratifying thing ever next to... well, you know. Managing to saw off that last bolt and getting the bumper off was the exact same feeling

Also i have no idea how i'll get the thing mounted back on since most of the bolts/studs for the bumper broke off because they were rusted too much. The easy to access ones i can just get that plate, no problem, but the hard to get ones look like they're integrated into the bumper... i hope it isn't so.
