Default Green Wire Death! Help!

This might be a dumb question but here goes. My '81 euro's green wire looked a bit nasty at the connector(near the jump post/14 pin) so I decided to take it apart. The insulator that fits INTO the plug literally crumbled and fell apart. Next thing I know I'm looking at 2 spade male plugs. And they were pretty grungy. I cleaned them with some fine sandpaper and re-inserted into the plug sockets and wrapped with some electrical tape. I can't get the car to run and wonder if this now missing insulator could be the reason. Help!!!!!!

bite the bullet and buy a new green wire,
It should make the car run for another 20 years.
dont try fixing an old wire.
NOTE this is the most critical wire in your car

Maybe they are backwards or something else was damaged. Easiest next move is to buy a known good green wire.

I know I will need to buy a new one. The car is well worth it. I'm just wondering if that crumbled and now completely gone insulator that plugs into the connector is causing ground issues that would keep the car from starting.....

there is a good chance that the wires are shorting internally since the connector had crumbled,

I actually manged to replace the green wire using the old connections from the dirstibutor end and some teflon wire.

Can't recommend it, it took about 2 hours to do it. And the teflon wire wasn't cheap. Connection from the distributor isn't meant to be re-used.

I am going to get a new one and be done with it. Riq79 I don't have your luck or skills to do a repair but it's great you were able to save yours.

I hope you don't mind me asking but what is the typical sign ( running wise ) of a BAD green wire? I have a friend with a 83 that he has TOTALLY went through and looks show quality. He is a GOOD Porsche mechanic. The car runs ruff cold. Will bog down with gas pedal cold. After its warm...its down on power.

Hi Dean,
low or no spark is one symptom. No start, apparently the juice that goes thru it supplies fuel pump too. Mine is seriously toasted from engine heat. The insulator crumbled and disintegrated when I unplugged it. This is info I've found on the forum. I'm not an expert by any means. BTW you're green 928 is just gorgeous! I looked at the thread when you restored her. Amazing stuff.
