Upper bell housing bolts should both be the same size and pitch ( 12x1.5x50). Did not notice these were not the same pitch when I removed them from the old motor, only noticed when Stephen and I were installing them into the new motor:

Luckily, the local independent hardware store has a surprisingly good metric selection ( much better than Lowes or Home Depot)

Now that's done, you can delete one of those items.

The sensor on the bell-housing (grey wire) was/will never be used. It can be removed and the hole plugged. (TDC sensor for a factory diagnostic machine.)

Already gone, but not sure what to plug hole with. I could just cut the wire and use old sensor body..

I was thinking an old nickel and some silicone sealer, but if you went whole hog on some titanium/carbon plugs (for weight savings), I might be in...

Someone could 3D print something that would fit nicely... >Hans<

I figure my laser place would charge me less than a buck each for fifty 1/8" aluminum plates. (Roger would probably dig this.)

I JB welded a quarter to that RPM sensor hole, works a treat,
you will never know its on the housing till the air cleaner is removed

On a serious note, next time I pull a motor, since you have to drop clutch anyhow, I think I will leave bellhousing connected during pull, and just disconnect at torque tube instead. Even with the correct wrenches, top bellhousing bolts are a pain, but with clutch out, torque tube<>Bellhousing bolts are easy.

In other lessons learned:
1. When I pulled the motor, I had the lift come over the side;
2. When Stephen and I dropped the "new' motor in, we came in from the front.

Next time, I will do both from the side. With my lift at the front, the jack piston is right at the front bumper, risking damage to bumper. I had plenty of clearance from the side to get the motor over the fender, even with car up on liftbars at jackstand lowest settings.

I was at 1/2 ton setting on lift, and got plenty of height.

Also, since then connection across the load leveler is to the diagonal lift points, a strap around the lift arm down to belt pulleys is useful for true fore-aft leveling when dropping the motor in, as load leveler adjustment also causes left-right movement.

the bell housing will hit the firewall when you try to remove the engine with bell attached

Even with all the room available in front of motor with radiator and fan off?

Drat. But not the end of the world. That does mean you really do need the correct wrenches, or the top bell housing bolts will make you eat a bullet.

is what I used.

Edit:

I removed and reinstalled my engine with the bell housing and had plenty of room to pull it forward and clear the firewall. All accessories and crank pulleys were removed though as well as the radiator.

Some other interesting differences between the '85 S3 motor and the '86 S3. The '85 dip stick is the ugly bent coat hanger style. You can't even easily upgrade it with the '86 dipstick because they are different lengths:

Why is that? Different tube lengths:

Why not just swap the tube too? Can't do that because the tube mounting scheme is entirely different and require a whole different center belt cover:

'85 Cover:

Versus the '86 cover. Note the extra bulge and mounting point for dip stick tube?

More on Dipstick: Some decent searching provide more background.
Apparently there is a TSB on earlier dipsticks, as the length and oil capacity was changed:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-markings.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/attachme...b-dipstick.pdf

My '86 Dipstick apparently has the same blade length as the S4+ dipsticks, just with a handle designed to burn you when checking oil at the track:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...fferences.html

Carl may have a replacement that is better than the coat hanger style:
