Meh, I never had any problem having period correct license plates on my cars. I would just order a custom plate with the appropriate number character sequence and then had the plate repainted in the correct colors.

For example, for my 1966 Sunbeam Tiger I wanted a period correct 6 character black and yellow plate. I paid for a personalized plate with some random looking"SAM 123" string of characters and numbers. The plate arrived in the current white configuration. I promptly had it painted in black and yellow, voila! Sneaky concours trick. Never ever had a problem with police or smog inspection. Registration only lists the characters on the plate.

Nah, 7 digit gold/blue plates started in 1980, blue on white 'sunset' plates were 82 to 87, blue on white CALIFORNIA block prints from 87-94, and blue on white 'script' California from 94-98. Says the recent California transplant. How long you been here, Mike?
