I will finish up the drawings tonight, and send it out for bids tomorrow then. I should be able to get firm pricing numbers after the tooling/piece quotes come in, and from there we can see if we can get enough interest to make these grills a reality.
To answer a couple questions - yes, it may be possible to do enough destructive modifications to get an 89+ grill to fit.
These speakers do already fit inside the 84-88 square frames with a waterjet cut adapter ring.
Crossover is still in development. It will probably take 6-weeks from the date of design conclusion to finished crossovers, as there is a significant delay in getting the custom capacitors made. So, these will likely be ready for both the 84-88 and 89-95 late January or early February.
Thanks
Hans

So, just to clarify for myself....
What is being sold is a rear speaker kit for the 6.5" hole in the rear....not just the adapter/ring/surround?
In the original post there was mention of using your own speaker/driver? Does this mean there is an option to buy the "set" (which would include plastic ring/adapter AND a speaker) or just the adapter...thus allowing one to mount the adapter and install any 6.5" speaker?
I was just about to rip the old 6.5's apart so I could use the surround/ring to mount come HD-M6+'s in the hole, but I also re-foamed the 6.5's and they sound good and wanted to keep them intact. I was going to try and fabricate a surround out of wood.

Jeff,
I will offer the grill assembly/mount as a separate product, allowing people to use their own drivers if they would like. I currently do offer the tweeter grills as a separate item for those who need them.
I would offer the 4" grills, but I ran low on them, and am reserving all remaining supply for my drivers, until I reorder.
Please note though, that the rear grills on their own will be a relatively expensive item. Based on previous tooling costs, I am expecting to have almost $4000 in tools to get these made, as the left and right are differnt. I also generally have to order 1000 pieces, usually at a cost under $3. So quick math is $4000 in tooling and $6000 to meet MOQ's = $10,000. So if I only plan on selling 100sets (which is very optimistic) my break even on the grills would be $100/set before adding any soft costs like handling, shipping... etc.
Depending how you look at it, the cost could be either prohibitive, or a great deal. They will look stock, and trying to have something similar fabricated at a stereo shop would easily be in the order of 4+ hours at shop rate, and the result would likely be sub-par. It is VERY difficult to try and match the contour of the rear quarters. I couldn't even measure/draw it appropriately in CAD, so after several attempts, I had to send one out to be digitized with a CMM.
I am hoping that I can get reduced MOQ's, in the order of 500pieces, but that has yet to be determined. I will have these answers later in the week after sending the drawings off for quotation.
Thanks
Hans

DEAR HANS
I will up the ante and send you a check today for another set of SUPERB front speakers for another project I have running.
But for the back speakers, PLEASE, PLEASE offer a 2 ohm option. I am not planning on ripping the stock amp out... Are there others in my shoes? If so, please let your voices be heard!

John,
If the rings get made, it will be possible to use another manufactures 2ohm driver.
I cant afford to order a batch of custom 2ohm drivers at this time. MOQ on drivers like this is normally 500pieces and doubt I could ever run through that supply.
However, I will look into a way of doing some trickery in the crossover to use the factory amp.
Thanks

I will likely buy a set as well, would probably want to use with stock amp for time being, so a 2/4 switch or something on the crossover would be great.
Am I right in assuming there's no 6.5" driver in the world that's shallow enough to fit this opening? Did you say once Hans that you could use one of your special 4" mids for this location with reasonable results?

Tom,
Yes, the 4" speaker used in the door can be made to fit under the stock 89+ grill with removal of the original driver (dremel required - permanent, destructive modification). I have a clamping adapter ring already designed, and it is being run in several installs.
Thanks

Hi Hans,
I met Larry (lwgolf) today at an Atlanta Sharks meeting. He is interested in the door setup with crossover along with the Sharkwoofer. Great guy with a nice GTS in need of audio badly.
On another note, put me down for your rear setup with crossover. Remember that I only have the drivers and tweeter. The 3rd speaker was eliminated.
Thanks,
Alan

Here's a thread revival for us!!
Just happened to see Hans' newer thread about the subwoofers. So, it reminded me of this topic! Did an option for the 2 ohm version finally go anywhere?
I would be in for 3 sets.
(For those new to the forum, I bought two sets of Hans' door speakers and they are great!!)

Agreed, I think with the revival of the sharkwoofer, a complete speaker upgrade would be great. I always kick myself for not buying when all this cool stuff comes about, thinking I will get it eventually, then when I am ready its NLA. So I am in for whatever speaker replacements become available!

Front speakers are permanently out of production. I still have inventory of the custom drivers for the rear, but never went through with the crossover design. Its expensive to develop, and the return... well... there wasnt any. Sorry guys, but I am out of the speaker game. If someone else wants to do a run, I would help, but be prepared. First batch was well over $15k to produce and I held inventory for over two years.
