Default Exhaust Differences

Hey gang,

What is the difference between the 89 & 87 exhaust that makes the x-pipe annoyingly loud on the 89 vs the 87 (both with CAT delete)? Anyone have an 87 exhaust they are willing to part with?

I suspect but am not 100% sure, that the 89 has the smaller resonators

Do you have big resonators (AKA intermediate mufflers) on the '87 and small resonators on the '89? That will make a difference.

also if you have RMB with an X pipe its nascar loud
fit a GT muffler OR an S4 muffler with a X pipe and small resonators and things will be good

The small mid mufflers on the 89+ like stated above make it a lot louder.

I have basically a GT system on my 89 and it sounds lovely with all stock components. The RMB I had was a bit loud for daily driving that I was doing at the time.

I removed the RMB from the 89. Stan you are correct, it was NASCAR loud for no reason. Even when I wasn’t on it, it was loud. I had x-pipe & RMB on the 87 and that note was perfect.

The poor thing needs some degree of silencing. If you are going to run with an X pipe and RMB you need a decent after market muffler in the mid position- I have Bullett mufflers in that location as per a Louie recommendation- seems to work quite nicely albeit the local police inspection authorities ask questions these days!

This is the setup I have on my 87, and it sounds perfect to me - no drone, and a nice wail when accelerating.

Stock exhaust manifolds -> x-pipe -> small resonators -> S4 muffler

That’s the setup I have but it’s not as sweet as my 87 setup. Plus, I bought a SS RMB that’s just sitting on the shelf.😩
