Default Shift Linkage Ball Cup Joint - Better Alternatives?

That shifter ball-cup angular joint on my '81 is worn out (again) and even a new $100 rubber cup seems like a less than "precise" piece of geometry. Anyone ever replace this with a metal-metal ball joint end or swivel joint? I think I would have to grind off and tap out that ball stud on the torque tube. I like to leave things original, but the stock arrangement here is expensive and probably looses its feel fairly quickly.

McMaster Carr has all kinds of fun bits to play with...

Thanks!

928ms has such a replacement metal part, the one for a 993 looks like it might also work, but maybe best options are one of the new shifter systems like Lizard has that update the geometry without using that ball.

I've also wondered about the feasability of using a high quality hiem joint in the place of the factory plastic/capped stud...

okay you have the old school Porsche designed synchro transmission.....just like I run....they don't shift very well and are prone to synchro wear....

However my freshly rebuilt transmission uses the 928 Motorsports all metal forward ball cup and 928srus delrin shift coupler bushings....it shifts VERY nice....however I have not tried Lizards shifter yet

Sterling,
Home joint up front in place of the plastic bushing would be OK. But requires the TT to be removed. Additionally, the other bushing for the front rod would need to be replaced too.

Do you have a new rear bushing for the front rod?
If not, then yes you do.

I've put the TT in a mill, machined most of the ball away and tapped it. I think I tapped it M8 and turned bushings to fit a 10mm rod end. That size threads into the stock tube.

This works very well and would be my first choice if I had a 'new' 928.
"Grinding" and hand drilling and tapping would likely fail eventually. I wouldn't do the mod unless the TT could be done in a mill.

Another project I did was eliminating that front tube and made a mount that attatched to the TT just in front of the shift handle, it did work very well and was able to be installed from the inside of the car. That was the ultimate fix but alot of work to make.

The cheap option is to replace just the nylon insert in the ball cup with the one sold for Clutch release arms for S4+. I have about 40,000 miles on one and less on another with no issues yet.

I have the 928MS steel cup, works well but it was a finicky PITA to install, and that was w/ the motor OUT of the car!

Various crowfeet and extensions required, but mine went in with everything but the exhaust in place.

Default Thanks

Thanks. This is all great stuff. The drill and tap out for a 10mm ball joint end is what I was thinking and I do have the torque tube out and have a big azz drill press that can do decent milling with good clamps. I'm intrigued with replacing the cup insert with the release lever cup from the S4+. Does the ball "snap" into the cup or just ride in the bore. The old '81 release arm bushing is a straight bore with only a slight cup at the bottom.

I have an old dead torque tube around so I'm gonna cut off that ball and see how it goes tapping it.

I'll check out the Lizard Shift if I end up with Jackass shift.

Ben
