Strange front wheel hub
While changing seal (6) into my automatic GTS hub (2) I noticed hub itself is not same as others I have seen. Hub has 928...R casting number and early '92 casting week stamp. Bearings are same as usual but area machined for hub seal is 7mm wide when every seal I have seen is 10mm wide and can't be used in this case. Every other measurement seems to be same as in other hubs I have on hand including ones from manual GTS. Other strange thing is that both caps (10) in automatic GTS are older style and thus will not fit properly over the hubs. Anyone seen this before? Where to find proper seal for this hub? I haven't taken seal off from other hub as its ok but its different than normal setup. Its part metallic but is clearly not same as 477... part number normal seal.

I didn't have any problems installing new seals into my GTS hubs but the dust cap is different from the earlier caps, it's 'low profile' and can't be removed with a 9165 puller.
if you look at PET for say a '91 car, the dust cap # is 911 341 684 00 . For all 92-95, it lists 928 341 684 00. I know some people trying to fit 993 Turbo wheels have issues with concave center cap clearance, perhaps the low profile dust caps on GTS were intended to be used with some center caps that never made it onto 928's ? How's that for farfetched?
Here's a lousy pic of the low profile cap partially installed, I think I was pushing it back into place after a discussion about not hammering on hubs to spare the bearings.

How odd! I puzzled over the concave cover that came on some S4 hubs I got a while back ... asked myself, why did Porsche bother changing the shape of a dust cover? Now I know ;-)
