Well. My all aluminum radiator finally decided to go to the scrap heap in the sky.
End tanks were epoxied this summer because they were leaking. They are leaking once again and the shop said once they epoxy it you can't fix it again.
Glad to know there are new Behr units available 'cause that it what is going in.
Ron, the previous owner, put this in about 6 or 7 years ago. I guess that isn't so bad considering what I read the Behr's were stupid expensive back then.
I am getting a Behr unit from Roger at 928sRus. Good enough for Porsche, good enough for me. Why re-invent the wheel.
That's what I did on my GTS. I didn't know the radiator had a leak in it, as it did not leak until a pressure test was done. Roger sent a new one and I'm going to try and fix the original and keep as a spare.
I've got a new Behr radiator in the box for my 89, factory replacement delivered to my place in Vegas, $1602.04. I figure at $2100.00 retail, I did alright.
Roger had the 2-cooler Behr (928 106 040 02) on sale last year for $800, I put one in my GTS (so I can use the DS cooler for additional oil cooling). Not sure what Roger's current price is, but Mark's current listing is $995.

Polecat,
I absolutely love your Pantera. I had a 72, but yours is definitely
a cut above the rest. Congratulations.

Rob. I think I paid $895 for mine from Roger today plus say $50 shipping (priority mail).
Anyone know what a hunk of aluminum the size of a radiator will fetch?
John Zubicks scrap metal recycling here in London, ON pays pretty decent for aluminum. Look for a place that recycles it, and not just a scrap place or wreckers. In my experience they don't pay dick for aluminum/brass etc.
Glad that you experienced the pain of getting an aftermarket radiator before i did, now i'm deffinitely going to go for a stock used unit. What kind of sucks with Behr stuff is that AFAIK they are just an OE manufacturer that make specific radiators for specific cars, it's not like domestic rads where the radiator in a truck is the same as the radiator used in a V8 sports car. I looked at Behr's website and i don't think they sell any generic radiators, only model specific ones. So the 928 only has the Behr radiator that was specifically designed for it, that's probably why the prices for brand new ones are obscene. The BMW Behr rads used in the E39's come very close to the 928 rad design but are not a direct fit by any means.
To 17prospective buyer: There is a place in your neck of the woods that make custom alum radiators (BS&B Rad in London-no affiliation). I have a friend who has one in his vette for over 10 years now and no leaks. Give them any rad and they make it in alum. The vette's rad has welded tanks.
Thanks for the compliments on my Pantera! I bought it new, had 38 years to make it what it is. I've got so much money into it, it's almost to valueable to drive. But I do drive it when I'm not working on it.
As far as the radiator for my 928. I've gone the aftermarket route, on the Pantera, and some of my other cars and the parts don't fit. I went to BEHR for the factory replacement. The one I'm pulling out came with the car, so 23 years ain't bad. If our vendors advertised thier radiators as a direct replacement, I would have bought one from one of them. I hate to have to modify aftermarket parts to fit!
You are missing the point . The Behr units are all the SAME yours just made a trip through the Porsche Parts distribution network....same part, same fit, same radiator .....the ONLY difference is the Porsche mark up. But Volkswagon thanks you for your contribution to corporate profits.
