Tricky one. Similar to a car, the value is based on what the market will bear. Similar to a car, the money and time isn't worth much. What it comes down to is brand identity, and whether or not that brand can generate income. You have a brand since 928 Registry is well known, but have no history of generating income with it. To seek investors you may consider developing a cash-flow business model. You will need something which shows potential for the brand.
You could go that route or hand it off to an enthusiast how will continue your model.
Another option would be to seek investment dollars to back the brand, just because they want to see it succeed. Then once you have startup equity, sell it with the brand. Consider Kickstarter.
I wish I could see an easier way for yo to make some money off your time and effort, but even that will take some, well, time and effort. Good luck!

I went with #3.

Finding someone who'll but it is another issue. And do I get a cut? There's no value without the content and we put that in for free.

Put it on Ebay. Then all interested parties could bid on it and you get top dollar.

The key aspect is to maintain and built the site and keep it updated and that will require a lot of effort as you know. As much as I love the OC I see an issue in finding someone to volunteer to keep the site updated. Without it being updated with new information it will become stagnant.
As a commercial entity it may succeed with advertising paying for someone to keep it updated.

Hi Chuck. None of the three options fully represented my opinion. My thoughts are:
  1. Find a 928 enthusiast volunteer who will maintain/update the site for you, while you retain ownership.
  2. Sell it to Roger and let him find someone to do the maintenance/updates. (I wouldn't just sell it to anyone, that's why I didn't choose your option 1)

I'd be happy to volunteer, provided I could handle the technical side of maintaining the site. I'm pretty passionate about the 928, and I've compiled hundreds of photos myself (most including VIN numbers) over the years.

Thanks for all you've done to maintain the site and promote the 928 in general. IMHO, if there were a 928 "Hall of Fame", your site would be right up there with Phil Tong's old 928s4vr, which as you know was THE "go to" site when I first got into 928s back in the late 1990's.

Respectfully submitted,

Jarrod Wise

I like the idea of Rogers involvement, I would also recommend James Morrison to take over the site in some capacity. He probably has the most 928s on there, so his motivation to maintain the site should be strong, and he is just obsessive enough to keep it up to date.

Roger has the passion for 928's, is constantly involved with them, and if he makes it a sub-division of his web site it will be maintained. I vote for that option.

Was hoping you'd either revive it or somebody else would start a separate one.
Those kinds of sites are fun if maintained for content & navigation.
Mantaining is a huge admin task.

Mark are you saying you want to bid on it? Maybe you could get Tom to post the VINs of all those 928s that got away...

I agree sell, the non-profit worked well but you had a passion to keep it going, if selling it and perhaps seeing some 928 related advertising go up but the site is kept alive and active; so be it!!

I still have about another 100 '86 submissions...

I put together and moderated a web site for a community. When I left the community one of the vendors in the community asked me what i thought the site was worth, then offered twice the price to buy it, run it, and list themselves as the sponsor. I gladly sold it to them.

It's more important that it goes to the right home, even if it
was gifted to them rather than sell it to some fly by night .

And yes ! thank you Chuck for all you have done, hope you
come back some day

I think selling it would be the best way to go, someone like Roger who has a good 928 business going, and has expressed interest, would be a natural, or maybe a co-ownership with someone like him? Who know maybe the site could gain value someday, interest in these cars does seem to be going up somewhat.

First thanks for making the 928 registry I think its a great resource.

Since your asking the question,
I think that you should sell the site and be able to have an advisory position in its direction.

If you chose to donate it, I dont think the incentive to maintain it would be as strong.

Kinda like if you have to pay for something, you tend to take better care of it,
as opposed to if you receive a gift it will usually be squandered.

My thoughts on the new owners in order of most desirable to least are as follows.

Roger @ 928s R us, a vested interest in maintaining the brand, and more involved in other 928 Events

IB for Rennlist, as an added benefit for the RL 928 forum. Though it will probably be filled with ads

928 OC I think it will be a difficult site to visit and thus not be very useful for anyone thats not a member.

There are lots of other people that lurk on various sites and may be keen to know what their car history might be,
so I do think the 928 Registry has value,
the trick will be to see where it has the most value to the most people
