Already did this morning - I'm now delaying trying out my can of Foaming Intake Cleaner until I've taken pics of the valves and pistons to check carbon buildup

Remember what I told you. The higher compression in the Euro engine is due to the smaller combustion chambers in the euro heads. If you use the euro heads and a US bottom end ( w/ fly cut pistons ) you will still have a high compression ratio.

Gotcha. Well here's the deal, I don't know if I can use the Euro heads or not. After seeing the bores and pistons, I'm not sure they will be usable or not. If they are fine, then I will likely get the pistons flycut (if needed) and I will essentially be back to where I am today. But this time I will install a vampire system or ditch it all together and do a megasquirt or autronic setup.

However, if the heads are crap (and I think they very well might be), I will use the US heads and install the Euro cams. Re-install the SCer and go at it!

Yeah, but you are running a 5 liter. Your C.R. will be a bit higher because of that. Andrew is running a 4.7L

So, wouldn't using a US 4.7 block with 16V Euro heads essentially give you 10.0:1 CR, like the early 84 Euro (large valve relief cuts in the pistons)? Would the US pistons would to be fly cut to accomodate the larger Euro valves? Also, wouldn't this "in theory" make it a non-interference motor? I know that the later (late 84-86) 16V Euros made 10.4:1 CR because of the shallower valve relief cuts in the pistons, making them "theoretically" interference.

Or, am I missing something.

My early 84 16V Euro block/pistons:

Andrew, you don't need to cut the pistons. I didn't on mine and it runs just fine. It's interference anyway so who cares. It's just more interference now.

Andrew pick up one of those carpet/ movers dollies at HF, great for moving the engine that's not on the stand. I picked up the metal & plastic one (1000lbs) for 20 bucks!

Looking forward to seeing you pass torch, at least some knowledge, to the next generation of enthusiasts during the rebuild.

A couple of shots before the dis-assembly begins. It will also help if I forget how things go back together...
