SHARKS AT DAYTONA 2012; Sat. Oct. 6th at OktoberFast PCA Races

2 Attachment(s)
Its that time again for our annual Sharks at Daytona fall 928 get together, held in conjunction with the OktoberFast PCA Races that run from Fri. Oct. 5th, thru Sun. 7th. After we missed on 2010 cause they were paving the track & had no race; then last year it was a torrential monsoon for three days; its now time again to show up & show out to represent the 928s!

Our Shark get together will be on Saturday October 6th, in the infield at the Daytona International Speedway.

This year both Brumos and the Melbourne Porsche dealers are co-sponsors. So there will be even more going on, as I'm sure they will be "competing" to see who has the "biggest Porsche!" So far, there will be a Concours on Sat.; Autocrossing on both Sat. & Sun. on the Go Kart track in the infield; Track Touring around the famous Daytona International Speedway, including the infield road course; and of course, the PCA racing all three days.

I plan on entering the Autocross, along with my son. So maybe we can get a group of 928ers to Autocross like we did in Sebring a few years ago? The Autocross is held on the track's dedicated "Go Kart" track, so its not just driving around a parking lot with cones. Area is marked in green on the map. Cost is $30 to enter. :burnout::burnout::burnout:

If you want to show your shark, the Concours would be a great way to represent! Or, if you want, you can just watch the PCA races, tour the garage area to see the race cars up close & personal, talk to their crews, etc. At the end of the day, we can all gather for food, fun, & 928 fellowship.

If you've not been before, to get into the track infield(free), you just need to sign a PCA waiver & receive a wrist band outside the big tunnel in turn one, off Williamson Blvd.(area in red on the map) In the past, we've always gathered next to the Road Course section of the track(area in blue) Not sure this year with the Concours going on where we will be able to set up. I will have my 10x10 cabana set up near the Autocross track, so we can always make that the gathering spot if necessary. There is not any specific OktoberFast web site as in past years. But I'll post some links shortly for the Autocross registration & the Fla Crown PCA site too.

I've already been contacted by a several Sharkers saying they plan to attend, so Let's have a show of hands of who plans to attend this year???

jej3 09-08-2012 02:56 PM

Looking pretty good for coming down for the day. Either in the Shark or the Cayenne, depending on number of guests with me.

westija 09-08-2012 03:21 PM

If I get my car ready, I might attend. Please keep us posted.
Thanks

The 928OC Board has kindly approved us some funds towards us getting some hats made for our event. I'm gonna get some in black & some in grey, should look pretty cool. That way people can choose one in the color they like best. The design will be like the one we had in '06, which I think turned out well, but not on the lame tan hats that I chose back then.

Big Easy Sharkster 09-11-2012 07:08 PM

Mel, weather permitting, I'll be there. Coming up early Sat morn and departing that night. Looking forward to seeing all

RCK 09-12-2012 05:50 PM

Mel, I'm scheduled to be there behind the microphone again, probably not in the 928 (old timing belt makes me nervous); I'll try to get by but will at least give a shout-out over the PA--so even if you don't see me you'll hear me.

Always reassuring knowing that we have a true 928er "Callin the Shots" at the races Dick! Hope to see you there.

Ok,

Some of the preliminary scheduling of events for Sat. Oct. 6th at the track at Daytona.

-Autocross will be on both Sat. & Sun.; entry fee is $30, will clarify if that is each day or per day(think maybe per day). I plan to autocross on Sat.

-Concours will be Sat., from 10am-12 noon. Cost is $15. That covers everyone getting a ribbon & trophies for those awarded.

-Track Touring is from noon-1pm(as in you get to drive around the track at Daytona, including the infield road course); cost is $10 with the money going towards a charity. Right now they expect possibly running two groups with everyone maybe getting 5 laps. Keep in mind, you cannot drive up on the banked turns & you cannot slow down then speed up. I know, not as much fun, but hey you can say you drove on Daytona & how many wish they could say that!

-Lunch at the track is from 1pm-2pm, buffet style; cost is $15.

-PCA Racing will be going on Fri., Sat. & Sun.

All events will be available to register soon at the web site of www.ClubRegistration.net. I recommend you search by date(Oct. 6th). The events will show as being the OktoberFast at Daytona with PCA. The autocross is the only event showing right now & registration is not yet open. I'll keep everyone posted when the site is ready for registering as plans are still be finalized.

Man, why the 6th!!!

I would come, but my wife/fiance would kill me if I missed our wedding :\

This is a tough decision...

Big Easy Sharkster 09-14-2012 02:54 PM

If it helps... we have a lot of people in this forum with years of experince in this field. Would it help you make a decision if we offered some suggestions, opinions, encouragement?

I'm sure we can come up with a 'win-win' somehow

MGW-Fla 09-16-2012 01:28 PM

Well it would be a good way to start the marriage & off right in her becoming a 'car chick'. Always helps when she's on board with attending car functions, purchases, etc.

I wish there were some suggestions... that would work. I'm afraid it is going to be a little while before I can join in the fun. :(

The 928 goes into the paint booth at the end of October though :)

Fabio421 09-20-2012 05:15 PM

I just wanted to put the word out that I will be attending. I actually pulled my car off the road over the weekend and started tearing it apart to begin the Megasquirt conversion when I remembered that I need to be in Daytona on Oct. 6th. I cannot afford to miss this event so I've decided to put that project on hold for a few weeks. I'll be there with the turbo car and Tampa928s should be with me as well. I look forward to seeing you all there.

NordicSaab 09-21-2012 09:58 AM

Seems like there are alot more 928/Rennlisters in Florida than I originally thought.

Are any of you part of Spacecoast or Suncoast PCA? I travel to both because I live in Suncoast and have family in Spacecoast.

Fabio421 09-21-2012 11:06 AM

I spoke with Francois yesterday. He will be driving up on Thursday if anyone from the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale are would like to join him.

Big Easy Sharkster 09-27-2012 08:54 AM

I see the Club Registration website has the 'multi-event' catagory open for registration now for those wanting to concours, drive & dine, track lap and lunch.

Mel, is the concours something that us 'well driven but still pretty' cars want to get into, or are we competing against the pros?

For $10 to take a lap on Daytona Speedway is gotta be one of the best bargains around for us non-racers.

See you next week-end

Sharkbody 09-27-2012 10:53 AM

It certainly makes for some fine photo-ops. As far as the concours is concerned you should get the green light. Remember, there are seldom-used categories the casual entrant can aspire to. One of my favorites is "most appealing placement of dash cracks". Another is the "obscene negative camber category" which falls under wishful thinking . Also "sexiest @ eye chart distance" comes to mind. G

George!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :jumper: Are you going to Daytona?

I think the best time I've ever had at a P-car gathering was when George and I crashed the PCA concouse event at the St. Pete yacht club just so we could have a good parking space for the ALMS race. We spent a good part of the day coming up with off the wall categories that we could win such as "best use of an undersized wheel" , "Most appealing placement of dash cracks", "Nicest car that wasn't invited", etc. Good times indeed.

Big Easy Sharkster 09-27-2012 11:42 AM

is there any place up there near by to clean up the car? I'll be driving in from Tampa that morning

Sharkbody 09-27-2012 11:56 AM

The undersized wheel one was a real crowd pleaser. I think we had em on the ropes for a while. I'm planning on attending and wanted to get a feel for when folks will arrive and how long and where they might stay. Also, how many do you see as real possibilities? Thinking about bringing the camper but may have tire issues. Give me a call when you get the chance Shawn and maybe we can come up with something interesting. G

Its being sponsored by the Fla Crown PCA, so it should be just PCA owners from the area mostly.

That said, some have some fantastic cars. We were just in a Car Show at the TPC in Ponte Vedra Beach last Sunday with the wife's '91 928 & our 968 cab; the winner of the Porsche category was a pristine '59 356 that looked like it was just off the show room.

I say if you want to enter do so cause there will likely be no other 928s unless some of our own enter & it'd be good to have representation. Yours would be stiff competition for any others entered of any model.

Really GREAT to hear that you are gonna make it George, its just not a Shark Party less you are there to referee for us! Especially liked it that year you wanted to race that Boxster for pink slips! :burnout:

Who's going, when and for how long? G

Big Easy Sharkster 10-01-2012 04:39 PM

my plans are to head out of Tampa about 0600 Sat morning. Expecting 2h 15 min drive (max) I'm registered for the Concours at 10 am and the lap around the speedway at 1200. Coming back that night.

I won't be back from Trinidad until Friday night. I'll wash my car Sat morning and head towards Daytona. I need to leave Daytona by 5pm as I have a prior engagement to attend that night.

MGW-Fla 10-02-2012 12:08 AM

We'll be driving down after work on Friday & staying the weekend. btw, The autocross got scrubbed due to lack of registrations.

Sharkbody 10-02-2012 04:51 AM

Should be less expensive then. Let's talk to the safety people about an after-hours version. G

Sharkbody 10-02-2012 10:47 PM

How often does anyone actually see another 928 on the road while driving their own? Excluding events and proximity to specialty shops of course. Seems like the hen is still gumming her food. G

jej3 10-03-2012 10:53 PM

Woo Hoo! Signed up for myself and my two boys to do the Drive and Dine plus Parade Laps. May choose to caravan from Brumos @ 8AM on Saturday Morning. See many of you there!

MGW-Fla 10-03-2012 11:25 PM

Your boys will have a great time I'm sure, more Porsches & race cars than they'll be able to remember! Look forward to seeing you there.

Nice pics. Sure looked nice during the touring laps. Who'dathunk the monsoon season was right around the corner. I enjoyed seeing everyone and making new acquaintances. Maybe we can ramp up for Sebring. Hot dogs, cookies and cokes anyone? G

p.s. Lost tach on way home. Any ideas on the possible source?

Mel,

Great job putting this together... the hats are super! Thanks to 928 OC and yourself for this. For us non-racers, taking a couple of laps on Daytona was awesome. Here's a couple more pics

thanks for inviting an 'ex' shark owner! great to see everyone and it was well worth it even if we did get a little wet. we need to get together again at sebring......start planning for that now!

Juan Lopez 10-08-2012 04:29 PM

I was there racing my 69 911S (see my avatar) and saw the collection of beautiful 928's out there. Thanks for bringing them out. Lovely cars!

jej3 10-08-2012 05:51 PM

My kids and I really enjoyed the outing. Nice to meet so many Shark owners in Florida (instead of having to go to North Carolina @ SITM!)

Nice to meet George, Sean, Scott, Jerry and Francois!

Thank you VERY MUCH from my 9 yr old to Jim for giving him his big brother's seat in the 928 while my older son rode the track with Jim (video to follow)

And thanks to Mel for providing ample shade on a steamy day. These are the kind of memories that stick with a kid

Video from the Parade Laps... Audio and Shakiness not soo good. I think my 13 year old is trying hard for a bunch of new mounts for the vid. camera :)

Thanks again to Jim (G8RB8) for letting him ride shotgun in the boxster

G8RB8 10-08-2012 09:06 PM

My pleasure Trey. I'm glad we got some shots. I assume he found his hat?

Hi Mel,

Thanks for organizing and also OC for the caps. It was great to meet new 928 guys and also great to see kids getting the shark bug from their dad. We should definitely do the Sebring 48 and then discuss the 12 hours afterwards. I am back Nov 4th from Europe then we can working on it.

Francois

Fabio421 10-08-2012 10:24 PM

Yes, Thank you Mel for prodding us to come out to Daytona. It was great to see everyone. Some new faces and some familiar ones too.

Quote of the day: " You know, that's one of those dogs that you could put a monkey on it's back and it wouldn't even notice" ~ George A. :roflmao:

MGW-Fla 10-08-2012 10:48 PM

Thanks to everyone who made the effort to attend. It was great to see some old 928 friends & meet new ones too. It really is more about the people than the cars. I'll post a few pics I took.......

He did find his hat, Jim. He was relieved that you left it for him :)

Big Easy Sharkster 10-09-2012 09:33 AM

Thanks for the pics, Mel!

Before anyone thinks I've been pulled over to the 'dark side' of trickin' my car for concours.... I was the only 928 so the outcome was inevitable.

Actually, all the concours contestants made a pass by the 928 to pay their compliments. I heard nothing but good remarks all day, no matter where we all went, about how good it was to see 928's out there. And as a testiment to our dedication, at the end of the day, when almost all of the non-racing participants/spectators had departed due to the rain, there was a gaggle of the 928 diehards, standing in the rain, admiring Shawn's '82, slinging sea stories and planning the next event.
