Your car has a thinner and narrower radio chassis than all the new units. Nothing will fit it unless you cut and modify the console trim and possible shave off some the warning panel above it. All detailed by Porsche in the tech suppliments. Now many owners of the OBs are really looking for unaltered early trim !!!!

Leave it stock! Keep the retro look! If you have an iPod, get one of those plug-in fm units that transmit your music through the radio, so no altering is needed.

Too bad your radio isn't the one I need for my car, otherwise I'd have offered to buy it from ya!

One of the better looking retro styled CD players IMHO is the Nakamichi CD-400... Little bit spendy:

Amazon Amazon

Not fu fu like blue tooth, iPod, DSP stuff, just a solid CD player

I like all of these.... The price is right, and they are very NON-BLING! Think they will go nicely with the 928 decor.

I like to put das Blaupunkt in das sharks!

These are all not available yet. Supposed to release next month.

This ones got direct Iphone control and CD. $99.99

These are all full DIN units. You'll need to trim or find another console to swap out.

Thanks to all of you for your sound advice. I'll have to rethink swapping out the Blaujunk!

Avoid FM transmitters - better to use one of the old cassette adaptors.. like the Philips PH2050w reviewed here:

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/rev...sette-adapter/

For the OP - a '79 5-speed is actually in the category of 928's which might appreciate sooner rather than later. So hacking up the console should IMO be avoided. If you decide you need a newer stereo, it might be worth picking up a used console from a later car which takes the standard DIN size stereo, and then modifying that to take your HVAC head etc.

The trick with FM transmitters is you get what you pay for. I have this one and the sound is very good.

I wonder if the Toronto 420 is better than the 410? Pricing on the 420 is half of the 410.

Guys your later 928s all have standard DIN chassis radios which means all new stuff fits ! He does not have that luxury. All the new radios will not fit his early car, not by much but it is not plug and play !!

I know. That's why I told him he would need to trim or procure a later console.
