Default 928 S4 My89 - Power Steering Fluid Leak

Hi,
Ok, so this weekend I noticed some groaning coming from the power steering rack/pump especially when cold and during right turns (Aussie car with RHD). Anyway I checked the reservior and bugger me if it wasn't almost empty/empty. So I promptly refilled with ATF and then jqcked up the front of the car to see where all this oil had gone!

So no great satruration of oil under the car near the reservior nor along the rack. There is a litle bit of a weep from pone of the hoses that will need some attenmtion. However there was a smear and drip of oil on the drivers side (remember RHD) rack rubber boot. Again not very much and hardly enough to justify the amount of fluid seemingly lost.

Anyway I wiped the boot and the weeping hose clean, topped up ATF and drove it around a little today (about 30-40miles). Left sitting on the driveway for about 3 hours and noted further oil dripping (small patch of oil) from the drivers side rubber boot.

So does this indicate I may have a seal of some description leaking?? If nbot any suggestions.

Cheers

Ok. It has been suggested that one or both shaft seals have expired meaning I probably have one or both steering rack boots full of power steering fluid :-(

Assuming its shaft seals, will this be a rack out job? If so, what else should I be attending to whilst in there??

Cheers

One of the 928's achilles heels I am afraid. You can purchase a seal repiar kit but no idea how effective they are. I purchased mine from Carl at 928 Miotorsports.

If the metal sealing surfaces are pitted then maybe a problem but otherwise no reason why they should not work. Suggest you replace the PS hoses WYAAIT. Also with the steering rack removed good time to replace the engine mounts if needed.

Tony,

this could also be the hi pressure line leaking.
First jack the car up and pull the rack boots edge off the rack with small screwdriver,
see if its filled with fluid ,
if so then a rack is in your future.

If not then inspect the hi pressure line these will leak from the flex hose to the crimp .
posting pictures of your rack and the hose layout would be a good thing.
Rebuilding a rack is a time consuming job and you need a big vice and an extra clean workshop.
If you doo need to get a rack i would suggest to look at 928 INTL racks as the rebuilt racks they sell are very hi quality I have installed 5 of them and no issues.

NOTE when driving the car if your going to full lock when turning then go to the stop and back off 1 inch at the steering wheel dont hold the wheel at the lock as this will damage the rack end seals.
NOTE some fluid loss through the rack end seals may not be cause to replace the rack simply drain the boots and monitor the leak and how long it takes to lose fluid.
NOTE when refitting the 2 lines to the rack make sure to install new sealing washers to the banjo bolts otherwise the fittings will leak.
Note if your replacing any parts of the power steering system consider swapping out the reservoir and the flex hoses that go to the pump to reservoir and the cooler to reservoir

Also, be VERY careful when reinstalling the banjo bolt for the high pressure line to the rack. They can cross thread at the rack very easily due to the resistance brought on by improper angle of the hose connection to the rack. If you feel ANY resistance when hand tightening...STOP, untighten the bolt and recheck to make sure the bolt is not being twisted by the hose connection. Speaking from personal experience...

The other end of the hose to the pump is a pain to get to tighten down if the engine is still in the car...but it can be done...

Mine was leaking from the steering shaft. I had success rebuilding it this spring. I'm not sure if I was lucky or not given the number of seals but it worked out ok. I bought the kit at the following adress. I thought for 65$ it was worth a try!

Removing the rack is fairly easy. I suggest you consider replacing the rack bushings and the tie rod ends while at it.

Many thanks to all who have responded. Some really good advice and especially from Mr Merlin. I will pull back both boots and check to see if/how much oil is in each boot. Maybe it's just one side/onbe boot. Maybe its not a lot of oil. Based on this observation will determine next steps. In the meantime I will check out 928 Intl for the reco'd racks.

BTW, alraedy have the Delrin bushes from Roger so in one respect probably a timely issue....maybe ???

Cheers
