Who pounced on this Ebay Euro?

Years ago I saw photo's of Marc's car if it was the wild blue ( a repaint I think) with great looking mag type wheels. That is one sharp car.
I think you would rather have a ride in mine and hear it as it moves, really something, but I have a lot of plans for it that will take time and money. And with gas @ $4+ bucks a gallon and my new emphasis on 2 wheels, who knows. I'll never sell it, but it is definitely a luxury item.
The thrills/gratification are much higher on 2 wheels not to mention the much cheaper cost of fuel.
The original owner specced mine well;
058 - impact absorbers fr & r
139- heated seat left
220- locking diff
251- auto trans shorter gear for CH, S, and AU
261- heated adj. pass side mirror
340- heated seat right
395- light metal forged wheels
415- wider track 21mm spacers
454- cruise control
490- hi-fi sound
533- anti-theft device
567- windshield green tint
593- bosch ABS
650- sunroof
plus full leather

Want to know what happened with this car?
I am new to the shark club as of last October. I've been lurking on this site and the OC site since acquiring this car. (I wish I knew about them beforehand - oh well) I assumed there was a thread on the car but didn't find this one after a quick search early on (I think I searched Buffalo not Lackawanna). Just came across it and had to laugh.
You guys who checked out the car were spot-on about the seller and the BS surrounding his story. I don't think I ever got the same answer to any question twice. I'm not sure if he was crooked, bat-**** crazy, or dumb. Probably all of the above. Didn't actually know anything about the car, what it was actually worth, or how to sell it. Unfortunately, I didn't know much at the time, either.
Long story Long - I had been looking for 928 for a couple of years (after falling in love with these cars in the 80s and finally having a few $ in the bank) not knowing much about what to look for, etc. I wanted a mid-year model and a 5-speed. I am slightly above novice when it comes to car mechanics so I wanted a good running car - knowing they can be hard to find. I stumbled across this one on eBay and couldn't believe the car and more importantly, the location - I work 10 minutes away.
I met the seller and after a few EXHAUSTING meetings/conversations was prepared to make an offer (hence the eBay listing dropped in Sept).
....more BS...
The title (issued 8/2012) had an old lien, but no lien release, from a local bank that was acquired 15+ years ago. He insisted it wasn't an issue because he had a "paid loan" receipt. I work in the banking industry so I tried to explain how he needed to (and could) get the title cleared - he took that as an insult and accusing me of not being serious about the car (he was sick of all the "tire-kickers"). Fed-up, I walked away (hence the eBay listing reappeared). A week or so later, he called me to say that apparently I was right (the paid loan receipt wasn't going to work) and that he applied for a proper release from the successor bank. This was going to take 2-3 weeks.
I took advantage of the time - I was able to ID the "actual" original owner (also local) and make contact with him through mutual business associates, who immediately vouched for him. He is an older guy (70s) - bought the car in his 40s in 1985 and had it until approx a year ago when he became seriously ill. He took care of it but is not a mechanic (garaged, regularly maintained by local dealer). Gave/sold it to "Sam" to sell because he wasn't interested in selling online, given his condition.
I knew I was rolling the dice a bit but this was a local, good running, mid-year model, 5 speed. Given what I learned about '85 Euros, I knew I couldn't pass up this opportunity, especially given its proximity (and despite the BS factor).
After a few weeks, I got a call that the seller had a proper lien release - I told him I insisted on dealing with the original owner - so the three of us met at one of my bank's branches and finalized the sale.
About the car...
The eBay story didn't hold up completely.
There are some service records but not nearly all (corroborated by actual owner who said he didn't always keep them). Documentation DID include import/federalization records, original German title/bill of sale, original loan docs.
The TB (timing chain ) was NOT changed - there was a service invoice at 63k recommending change (crooked, crazy, or dumb?) - it has since been changed.
Car was resprayed approx 5 years ago to clean up some nicks (owner said from 60k miles and a hail storm).
Wasn't able to do a proper PPI (honestly, too novice at the time to even know what it would include) but a mechanic friend (not p-car specialist) looked it over in-place. Car is all original. Pretty much all gauges/electronics work (only fog lights don't come on). Body is in great shape and respray looks good (to my untrained eye). Mechanically it runs great and the engine is clean and well maintained, by appearances (hoses are good/clean, fluids good/clean, no hacked parts). Interior is in real good/great shape - by far, best of all the cars I had looked at previously. Wheels original / tires good. Accessories like keys (2 long/1 short/2 compartment), toolkit (one blank), spare, jack, luggage cover(small tear) included.
I have since had it to the P-Dealer and the service manager thought the car was in great mechanical shape for its age and he loved that it as a true "WP0ZZZ". Had the TB/WP all other belts replaced.
I got it in Oct and the work I had done wasn't finished until Nov (WP came from Germany) so I haven't been able to drive it much (to/from the dealership - 25 miles away - was fun) but I love the car. Even though it's in good shape, I kind of feel like I rescued it...
Pics to come (once the weather gets better) - any requests?

Welcome to the tank! Persistence and patience pay off. That is nice looking car and a twin dizzy!
Bring it to Hershey in April or Frenzy in the fall.

Congrats, you have a great 928 there. I know you said the owner was very ill, but I wonder if he shared any memories of buying/ordering it from back in 85?

Congrats - I was very close to going up and making a run on that car. Now I wish I had!
Anyway, I lived in Buffalo region when I got my first 928 many years ago. It was an 84. It needed alot of work. I had it at the stealership there in Williamsville, and that turned out to be a very expensive nightmare. Long and short, and hjaving had several of these cars now, stay away from the dealerships - they are not the best place for 928 service. You have a good shop there in the South Buffalo area just off SouthPark and below Tift, called Athol Motors. Once I found thse guys, I never went back to the dealer. They know the 928 too. Not a bad shop.
Good luck with the car, and please post more pictures!

He bought it soon after his business started making money and couldn't believe the money he saved with the exchange rate. He said almost 30k less the import fee.
He liked to take it to Canada and open it up on the QEW. He preferred risk of deportation over NYS fines and losing his license. Claims he had it to 140.
My Favorite: He said it attracted women like flies to honey. After I mentioned that I had a family and it wasn't exactly a family car, he said "don't be so sure, I fit three strippers in the back seat".

Ha! That's hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing the car in person. Actually, I may have already - about 10 years ago down in Ellicotville, I saw a pristine red Euro about the year as yours, no rear bumperettes. I wonder if that is the car you bought? Does yours have the rear bumperettes on it?

Glad you asked - that was the best part of making this deal and almost made up for the BS seller. I really think he enjoyed reminiscing about the time in his life when he bought it he smiled ear-to-ear bragging and talking about the car. A couple of items...
