Default Need a Muffler-save my Ears-X Pipe Installed with RMB!

Okay-got the X Pipe on tonight (Thanks ElGreco!) Put in the high flow cats as well (all new). My 0-60 time is definitely faster-without question. The car has opened up and the power comes on smooth and fast but...it is WAY TOO LOUD!

The 1991 S4 had an RMB (Black) in place already and the mid-size silencers.

My teeth hurt!

I need a muffler--what are my best options to keep the noise down--yeah I'm getting old.

Should I buy a used one? Will a 91 GT muffler work?

Thanks in advance!

WHAT?! BLUBB, BLUBB, BLUBB. WHAT?!

There are no mid-size resonators?

There are either the small 'GT' type or the big 'GTS' type ('86.5 & '87s have these too). The big ones are HEAVY, but do take out a lot of the noise.

Or put a muffler on. The S4-up rear mufflers are resonators, anyway (straight through). They should not retard flow much, if at all.

SORRY I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

I want a muffler or resonator-something-yes-any suggestions as to what works on a 91 S4?

I have to tell you I thought the solution was to put on 87 rear pipes with the large resonators. I was FAR happier with that than with my original 89 small resonator sections. Cut the resonance at 2200 RPM down by quite a bit. But recently I became less tolerant of the remaining drone, and when I put the original H-pipe with cats back on for smogging, I was back to being happy with the sound. The 928 Specialists RMB with otherwise stock exhaust is just too nice.

For me it's the power more than the sound. The RMB with stock 91 exhaust was great!

Either way need to find a resonator/muffler.

What the saying? Oh yeah, "If it's too loud, you're too old!" All comes down to personal preference. I love the sound of mine with X-pipe, no cats & RMB on top of stock mufflers.

With my X and Random cats I completely removed 2200 (and 4500) drone by 86ing the Dynomaxes and Y'ing to single 3" with Flowmaster 50. Added resonance tube which 'rounded' out the sound.

Just to add to this discussion:

We just got in our new BSRD 928 Sport Mufflers which are copies of a design we came up with years ago after finding that RMBs were a bit too loud, even with our stock exhaust system.

The BSRD 928 Sport Muffler has a nice in between stock vs. RMB sound with stock exhaust systems although Stefan (Stromius), who is now the owner of the our first prototype, also found it acceptable with his somewhat modified system. In fact we had shelved our design until Stefan somewhat pushed us into making a few more of them after his great comments about them on this forum.

They are hand made in the USA of full 304 stainless with 3" angled dual tips. They should outlast the 928. We are putting the finishing touches on them at the moment before introducing them formally. We only had 5 made, all for the 87 and up 928 model years, and one might already be sold. Depending on the response we will decide to make more or not.

Just thought to bring this up here since we have noticed a few threads about mufflers lately.

Cheers,

I just bought a bunch of things from this guy who is also a Rennlist member. He has the large 87 Resonators. $50.00 with pipes.

That's Pavel (if I didn't just mis-remember his name) an RL member and very nice guy. The $110 shipping cost may make it a wash to just pop in some other options.

I want to drop in a stock 928 Resonator and see if it cuts down the sound.

FYI-now that I know the sound is at 2200 Hz, that is right around the 2500 Hz range which is the most annoying sound to humans.

I run DR's X, hi flow cats and his RMB on my '89 GT SuperShark. I think the sound divine....

I admit I keep my foot out of it, unless I mean it, and just love rumbling around town, somewhat low key.......

When it is "go" time........ well, nobody is confused.

Yeah when my foot is out of it-sure-it is a beautiful rumble...but it's always go time!

I should have merged this into the other x-pipe thread...

Ask Pavel to cut the pipes off and just send you the resonators. That should cut the shipping costs in half.
