Talked to the mechanic. And he immediately went on and on about the 928 - under appreciated, etc. said he's done a few timing belts, told me all about CIS.....

Said they brought me to the right guy. And that he's the only guy around that would know what to do. Everyone else dead by now!

Said she started up and ran very rough for a few seconds. Very unhappy.

Said coolant overflow is empty (I thought it was half full and it was not hot at all)

Will start with plugs compression and move on to spark

I might have gotten lucky.

If the belt slipped.....

If the coolant is missing, euro heads on 95mm holes?

Please be something simple to repair.

Little to no compression on the left bank. Heading over now.

Win some you lose some. The right banks not far behind.

I figure the tin was too worn and pistons galling in the cylinder.

Oh well

Continue trip in a rental and flat bed her home on the way back

I think a short block is in order.

Btw the mechanic was a great guy. Very complimentary. Especially on the spark plug colors.

Well, I rented a car and continued my road trip to my family reunion in Concan Texas. We had a wonderful time.

And saved over $250 in gas alone! (Sometimes you have to struggle to find the silver lining.) Oh, and my son says, "Dad, we may have saved some gas money, but you can't put a price on the Street Cred we lost by NOT driving the 928." True.

Rented a U-Haul truck and tailer and towed her home. Now safe in the garage.

Pulled the engine yesterday. Got the heads off today.

Here is what I found so far. It ain't pretty.

But first. I've used Castrol Syntec 20w50 since break in - a few years. I've done trips from NY to the Poconos, to Six Flags and a trip to NJ. Trips in the 1 - 2 hour range one way. And these were all on hot days and at least 3 long waits in traffic jams (GW bridge).

Then Saturday morning I put in Castrol 5w50 as the recommended replacement of Syntec 20w50, and 275 miles later my engine is toast. I don't know if that was it, but I got to wonder.

Most cylinders are scored pretty badly, but on the sides. I expected the top and bottom where the main load would be. I haven't pulled the pistons yet, but maybe broken rings will do this?

Here are cylinders 5, 6 and 7.

The other side of 5.

Cylinder 7 and a very unhappy #8.

#1 is looking pretty bad too.

And #4 is in bad shape.

That's the worst of it so far.

I'll pull the pistons tomorrow and take a look at them.

Nope, no powder coating.

No nothing. Haven't done anything to the engine for years except oil changes, plugs, Merc injectors, air filter.

BTW, all plugs had a perfect color.

When you drained out the oil-how much came out. Have to assume a lot burned off but man-that does point to the oil either burning or leaking out...

Couldn't sit still, so went back out the garage and removed the oil pan and pulled out the #4 piston.

Since its cylinder was so scored, I expected some pretty ugly damage.

But it looks great!

What the hell happened?
