Hey all,
Been reading through a few charcoal canister threads but I couldn't find a definitive answer to two questions that Im loosing sleep over. Also I threw up some hose diagrams, so anyone in the future may find them handy.

Question 1) The simpler of the questions, the "EIN"/"IN" port on the charcoal canister should be connected to the engine & fuel tank side of the system, or the vent (open atmosphere) side of the system? I've read responses on other threads that contradict each other, so Im confused

Shown below are three diagrams from the mini-manual, the sticker from my hood (1983 5 spd), and the WSM diagram labeled '87 & Onward. Pointers in first two pics point to air box nipple on passenger side, pointer on third pic is the vent line to the rear. Disregard the red highlighting on pic 2.

Question 2) Both the hood sticker and the mini-manual show the vent side of the charcoal canister running to the air filter box bottom housing (post-filter) on the passenger side. Coincidently, I have a hose nipple on the bottom air filter housing passenger side as shown in the diagrams. However, the WSM and every other discussion Ive read (about the older cars) shows the vent side of the charcoal canister running to the open air vent in the rear bumper (#6 on WSM diagram) and this is what Ive found on my car. My car is set up with the vent side of the charcoal canister running to the hard line at the firewall, under the car and out the back to open air as shown as #6 in the WSM. So where does the air filter box nipple tie into the system? Or should it even?


Just so we're not confused, there is another hose nipple on the upper air filter housing (pre-filter), this one is connected the air diverter valve as labeled in pic 2 (just to the left of the pointer) along with the rest of the air injection stuff.

Do you have the Jim Moorehouse manuals collection on CD? It has the 1983 Service Info manual that clearly describes the venting system. In the description it states that the "IN" connection on the carbon canister connects to the vent line that runs to the rear of the car. The unmarked connection on the canister goes to the fuel tank vent connection.

You should cap the "post-filter" port on the air cleaner housing as it is for the pre-'83 tank vent system. Your air cleaner housing is likely "old stock" from the '82 model year that was used up in early '83 or was perhaps replaced by a previous owner. The 1982 and earlier vent system has the canister plumbed in parallel with the fuel tank vent while the '83 system changed to have the canister plumbed in series.

Excellent thanks Mike. I don't have the CD but maybe I'll get it. I figured it was the same as WSM but I'm finding that's not the case. I'll cap the air box, and I'll double check the line routing. Thank you again. I'll sleep better tonight
