I'll let IMO00 give the details, but he just came back from Chicago with a ... gasp... 911!

Went to see the car last night, looks pretty good for the price!

I think Imre may have had a horseshoe up his but with this one too, I am sure he will explain.

To ensure we have 928 content in this thread, he still has 2 928's in his garage!

Uhhhhmmmmm.......I'm going to hide now.

In all honesty, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make the next project car a 996. Any gearhead on this forum would have done the same......or I hope so. Saw the link to the pelican baord add in OT. It was posted in the 911 with Chevy power thread. A '99 996 with a broken engine for $5000 obo.
The choice was simple.....as long as it wasn't a scam, do whatever it takes to buy it. It was almost a 2200km round trip but I think it was well worth it. Was expecting an IMS faliure and budgeted to replace the engine. However, after pulling the pan, cutting the filter apart and straining the oil, there is no significant sign of any metal. So I might lucky and the engine is savable but being a hard core 928 owner, it sure felt wrong working on the 911. I'll post some pics when I figure out how to resize them on my phone.

The 928 is not going anywhere...................yet.

P.S. The trailer is Gaugeman's.

You do have that supercharger just lying around doing nothing....that might bring redemption....

It's that 'for now' comment that is disturbing.....

The 996 is not that bad of a car. A lot of people that read about IMS failures are deterred from purchasing them. It seems to be the 911's version of a 'TBF', but there are several steps to prevent it.

In the case of this one, the engine has a slim chance of being saved. Usually, it is better to buy a replacement engine. IMO, was there any presence of coolant in the oil? Those engines were considered 'porous'.

This one, so far, doesn't look like it has that problem. Something else is/are the problem/s.

Clearly this does nothing to dispel the myth...

Here is the pic I took before we started heading home. If all 911 owners are d$ckheads.....are all d#ckheads 911 owners?

Good luck with your project. I have always liked the 996.
