Default Oil filter - Porsche filter is recommended?

When I bought the car, I was given a Purolator filter. I didnt use it because I received a filter with a tune up kit that I purchased.

Is there a difference in the different brand filters?
Is the Porsche filter superior to the point that it is strongly recommended?
Do these filters have a shelf life?

I believe the Purolator filter is just a re-branded Mann filter so it will be OK to use.

I use Mahle and am happy with this product. I believe it is what originally was speced on these cars.

Cheers

I think the main differences are in quality and not design. For example the cheapo bottom of the barrel Fram (not all Fram are like this) filters used all paper construction, (filter consists of end caps, and filter media) which can collapse if the car is driven hard, and the anti-drainback valve material can vary from plastic to silicone. Also there can be a difference in the thickness of the filter casing itself.

A review on YouTube of the then-new Royal Purple high performance filters showed that the main differences between it and econo or normal filters was that the end caps were aluminum, drainback valve was silicone, and the case thickness was a few thou thicker than a regular filter case. My buddy was on a pit crew for a sprint car, and he said all the teams source out filters with a thick wall case.

IMO if you cross reference, you can use any brand you want, just know what you're buying before you do, and don't buy it for the name.

If my building EVER gets finished, I bought an STP filter from autozone, as the flush filter for her first start attempts...I plan on using a Mann or mahle after that

ive been supersticiously using Mahle, only because i have not had any oil related problems. what if the other brands restrict flow at high rpm RPM?? anyway, i have no proof other than my own sucess.

I just use what Roger ships me.. its either Mann or Mahle, I can't remember and I'm too lazy to go look and see what it is.

Restoration?

It's amazing how these cars drag you in to do so many jobs you assumed you wouldn't have to do.

Yes, stopped right when I got started to build a house and workshop....house will be done in January, workshop this month....priorities, dontcha know! Going to get separate power for the shop, so I can watch them build me house, while I work on the OB. I can't wait...I am about to pop with anticipation!

She is a major project, sitting since 93. But I have vowed to get the motor running by summers end.....
