Default Broken odometer

I got my 1984 928s from an old friend who bought it in 1986. He drove it for a while but it had been dormant since the early 90's when I got it a couple of months ago. I just got it running last weekend. Needed injectors, filter, pump, tank cleaned, new rubber lines. I just ordered all the belts, hoses, boots etc.
In the late 80's my friend was driving on the interstate about 65mph and attempted to reset the trip meter. When he pushed the reset it made a grinding sound, rolled the odometer forward 120,000 miles and the odometer stopped working. Has anybody had this problem?
The speedometer works fine. I would like to get the odometer working and set the mileage correctly or at least get the odometer working. Suggestions?

Pretty complete write up. I found polishing the rods was helpful with a coating of light oil. They tend to rust a little. If you do not address this then the new gear will bind and strip again.

Yeah, I think Dwayne added some washers or spacers in his to keep them spinning freely. I think in general though, the gear is good for 20+ years so you probably won't have the same problem again...

Dont know if there,s any truth in it or not, but they dont like being re-set while the car is travelling at speed ?. This is how mine failed, now I only re-set it while the car is stationary with ignition on.
Saying that though , the car was thirty years old when I changed it, and you would have thought if the above was an issue, then it would have been mentioned in the driver handbook ?

BTW, I got my new odometer wheel from Roger 928,s r-us
