Default Distributor caps and rotors - When to change?

982 S4 89. When is it time to change Distributor caps and rotors? What is a sign that these parts are wearing out?

Thanks

Michel.

I inspect once a year for pitting of the rotor tips and cap contact pins as well as any carbon tracks inside the caps that might indicate a crack or short circuit path. If there are none of these signs I leave them alone for another year.

My 88 went 140 km and 18 years with the originals with no problems.

I changed them and the plug wires just because I thought it was about time to do so.

These parts seem to me to be a lot more robust than the same parts on other cars I have owned.

Still things can change quickly. Don't want to wait until a misfire. Always good to take a periodic look.
