928 GULL WING or SCISSOR (LAMBO) doors ?
Hi All
I like my 928 to be a little unusual or even unique, so I am considering either GULL WING or SCISSOR (LAMBO) doors…
I have done some research, but would also like any input from anyone here…
Good idea, bad idea?
Opinions on the concept or opinions on the actual engineering (strength of roof or hinge panel) , or suppliers etc etc.. ?
All the best Brett

Bad idea, my opinion.
Someone parks too close to you, can't get out. Car rolls over, can't get out. Low ceiling, can't get out. Pull up next to a Lambo or Gullwing Merc, look a little ridiculous.
Leave Lambos and Mercs to their own devices and let your Porsche be Porsche
Maybe tweak the headlamps? Someone on here has "fisheye" looking ones, looks a bit odd but very unique.

Race Car
argh.
I'm not usually in the 'purist ' camp.
And I've really admired the nitrous work.
If you must go route-- there are a bunch of Strosek bits on ebay germany right now. Splitters, hood, etc.
Perhaps that would scratch the itch?
When I had a 3000GT VR4 I recall one company was regarded as having decent door product- all others were prone to failure at various points- binding hardware, inadequate mounting points, flex, leaks/rattles, etc. Sorry, I don't recall the name of the operation, just that finding the most costly approach available is likely the same place.

How do the safety crews at drag strips in the UK feel about Lambo doors?

They are not bothered at all, and mine is rarely used drag racing any more...
I have more safety than they are used to anyway...
They dont insist on harnesses...I have 6 point harnesses...
They dont insist on helmets on RWYB days...I always wear a helmet...
They dont insist on Race seats...I have a Momo Race seat...
They dont insist on Extinguishers...I have two...
To be honest, their idea of safety is...dont wear a short sleeved top....I wear a 3 layer Nomex Race suit (with all the Nomex undewear, gloves, boots etc...
So they would never even notice body alterations...and certainly not care....
Its why I look after my own safety in such an over the top manner...I have seen several people die when I was drag racing professionally in Top Fuel...and each time it was caused by LACK of safety.....either through bad safety equipment or personal safety stupidity...

When done correctly they can be cool.....key is "can" be.
Sadly most are hack jobs, specifically the ones that use the stock latches / hinges and just add a slight "up" swing. The Strosek above is a rare example of a quality conversion.
The Gullwing doors are a whole different animal. A modification like that can severely upset the structural rigidity of a car. So unless a full cage is in order to strengthen the car, I would stay away from that route. Yes a few aftermarket tuners made such changes, but those cars were not being used for top speed runs either. A lot of those mods were strictly for show.

Hi
Yes, when I thought about Gullwings, i suspected the only way to do it would be to add a full cage to strengthen the roof...
