I would assume you mean the foot rest. If i recall, you will locate four screws after you remove the hood removal switch panel. In a nutshell, you will need to duck underneath the dash with a good light. I almost pulled my back out. I needed someone to pull me out. LOL
PS their is an electrical box behind the box. I was suprised and had no idea what its purpose.
I am glad i did not drill an aftermarket foot rest on it. :>

Let me be more specific - I want to remove the carpet that covers the dead pedal.

I could be wrong but i removed the side panel that opens the hood. I left the cable attached but removed the plastic bezel around the pull handle. I then proceeded to remove the dead pedal. I installed an enire carpet kit changed my seats out with Turbo's and re-stained my back seats and the entire interior, plus leather repair in the back. I am still woking on repair the dash before my restain.
If you get under the dash you'll understand what to do. Its a pain and i had a hard time getting the pedal set right. Mark how it was previously installed.

if your swapping carpet then you need to remove the hood latch quadrant,
that involves simply unscrewing 2 allen bolts ,
no need to remove the top cover of the latch,
it will capture the bolts and they can stay in the latch till its time to install them.
That said to remove the dead pedal its easier if you remove the lower leg guard first it is held with bolts on either end and removing the duct housing on the side of the dash will let you see the bolts the other end has bolts that attach to the console. and there is one bolt under the steering column
NOTE(There is not any need to remove the hood latch quadrant to remove the dead pedal)
NOTE you may be able to contort to get to the pedal without removing the leg guard .
Once the guard is out of the way, if you have removed it.
there are 3 10mm bolts that hold the dead pedal box to the floor,
they may have black plastic caps on them.
once the bolts are removed lift it slightly as there is a pin thats goes into the bottom of the box ,
then there are 2 elex boxes attached to the rear of the box,
these are for the warning system one has a black connector and one is yellow

I recall removing the dead pedal with no other disassembly.
I don't remember how exactly but I'm thinking a hidden locating pin or similar and a bolted angle bracket - in any case I think it was pretty obvious - no great difficulty. Did it vary by year?

I don't know if the attachment points are different on S4/GT and GTS (I believe the part numbers are different for the foot support itself), but here's a photo of the foot support my '90 S4 showing the fastening points.
IIRC, the bottom hole fits over a pin on the floor, and screws fasten the other two points (hole in the ear on the right side of the photo above and hole across on the other side of the support) securely.

Got it out. Missing the 2 screws on the right side. Only a single 10mm bolt held it in place. Thanks.

The picture from Ed matched my recollection (forgot one attachment point)
