I am so tired of this constant defensiveness from GTS owners and their lackies. It's okay to objectively discuss (and even criticize) most 928s unless they are owned by certain people or they happen to be a GTS. Otherwise, the gloves come off and the GTS wagons circle to fire volleys of insults about how ignorant and jealous the unwashed and "not in the know" 928 rabble are.

Maybe the GTS clique should publish guidelines about exactly what the rest of us are allowed to say about your precious automotive binkies. Something like: Do not comment on the price of a GTS unless to exclaim that the price is too low! Go ahead, have fun with it and help the rest of us out.

It is almost always the GTS crowd that gets nasty in these threads first. It must be really stressful to those owners who have so much of their net worth tied up in their GTS that they lay awake at night worrying about Rennlist driving down the value of their 5.4L retirement fund.

I always think how easy it is to take a $500 928 and make it look and operate like a GTS or better. Definately not $95,000. This is a car for a museum.

This car isn't museum quality, or worth much over $60k or so.

OTOH spending say $40k on a beater would not make it worth $60k even if it looked exactly like and performed exactly like a GTS, it would just be another $20k to $25k frankenporsche depending on the details.

What gives this car value is that it has low original miles, its a real GTS, and in nice original condition.

I love how you seperate us GTS owners into a seperate category. First and foremost, we are 928 owners/fanatics. The fact is that the GTS is the most desirable 928, as it is the most powerful and the last 928 model, so it is logical that it should command a higher price (much higher price to collectors). I am by no means saying that GTS's are better than other 928's, just that they are worth more, especially in the eyes of collectors.

Also, why must we argue all the time on this forum, especially over something as insignificant as cars? We all share a common interest, and that is why we are here. GTS owners aren't the one's that start these arguments, either. We do, however, get defensive when people talk about our cars as being way overpriced, especially when they are selling for these high prices.
Let's all just get along.

Rare and expensive doesn't make something an automatic classic. My list goes;

Original early model.
GT
S2 Euro
All the rest.

As for the GTS in particular, my preference would be for an anything in a color I like with a new interior, and a Greg Brown motor. For my taste the GTS is too heavy and under powered stock, and modified there is no benefit to starting with a GTS.

The market right now still reflects too much of the sticker price to be a good indicator of what will be the longer term classics. Early cars were 12 years old when the first GTS was sold in the US, and that time and price differential beat down the value of early cars, and that beaten down value put many of them into the hands of people that let them decline even more. Time will sort this out eventually.

dangleb..I agree with most all of what you had said, but I am not sure you are so accurate on a GTS being under powered. We all know they were factory de-tuned as they were being phased out and Porsche didn't want it to be faster than their best selling car at the time. However, not sure how much time you've spent behind the wheel of a 5 spd GTS. If you think it lacks performance, you are soaringly mistaken! I think you are listening to too many people that sway your thoughts. You just don't spend that kind of money to buy a nice GTS to improve performance, you enjoy it for what it is...whole different thought pattern. If you want to hot rod a 928, save your money and go for a less expensive model that you can sink money into if you feel like you have to something prove. It's this exact lack of thought that you bring which boasts ignorance over the issue of higher priced GTS's. One thing has NOTHING to do with the other.

Range Rover is right on.

I have no dog in this fight as I love all the variants but see them all as very unique to each other almost like different cars. None of us know what the market will do for any of them. However there is no freakin' way that silver GTS sells for 95k.

Okay. We just completed the emergency GTS owner's conference call. Meeting minutes and our “preferred Renlist GTS comment guidelines” will be published soonest. In the interim, please use the following guidelines when referencing any GTS for sale:

“Hard to believe Charlie Sheen didn’t own that one too!”
“That GTS is easily worth twice that amount!”
“I’ve heard they only sold 400 in North America and now there’s less than 20 NOT in museums!”
"Who cares about milage on a car like that?"
"Connecting rods my butt, I wouldn't give tracking a 93 GTS a second thought!"
"Consuming oil is a good thing in these cars--it keeps the exhaust lubricated."

Alternative Comments:
“I’ve heard they even have a small cooler in the rear A/C vents to keep the Grey Poupon cold!”
“I wonder why superior Porsche’s like the GTS came with a tool kit in the rear anyway?”
“Hard to believe police stop a car like that for speeding…”
"Roger Tyson loves GTS owners so much, he gives them a 30% discount on everything they purchase!"

Thanks

I am ok with outrageous prices for gts as that should pull up the value of all .... go for it, ask high and you might get something near what you want.!!

Now that is funny but how could any GTS in California not have belonged at one time to Charlie Sheen?

Funny stuff NoVector, maybe you missed your calling and should have a magazine?

I have some bias related to my opinions.

My point of view is as a buyer, not a seller.
I am on the sportscar side of the sportscar - luxury barge scale.
I prefer a display of frugality to a display of wealth.
I see no reason to keep the Grey Poupon cold. I use room temperature yellow mustard with a few table spoons of dry hot Chinese mustard mixed into the bottle.

I've never driven a GTS 5 spd, but I recall driving a Coupe DeVille once, can't be that much difference. Some of my older friends love their STS, so its not like I am knocking the GTS, just not for my taste.
