Default LIKE I SAID.. WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY

Believe it or not..... I got the car titled today and legal Michigan plates.

It worked out sort of like Keith said. I talked to a few places, and I had to go to more than one DMV, but I finally got some help, and got it done. It definitely cost me some cash $$$, and I am still gambling a bit, but I think it will all work out. If anyone out there ever needs help let me know.

So now that you got it titled, does that mean you can sell it's parts in all 50 states?

Very good for you!

Glad you took the initiative and didn't let the crusty, pessimistic comments from the many deter you. It may have cost you some cash, but you now have increased the value of the car far beyond the reach of most here. New game plan...take your time and do it right. Keep it...GTS prices are going to increase even more.

Congrats again

^^^ Not cool.

As to the OP, congrats, I didn't think it could be done. I assume there is a reason that you aren't sharing the details...

No reason to ASSUME that.... I did everything by the book and legal. I paid the sales tax, plate, registration and all the other stupid fees... everything!! OUCH!! It is just that first, I found the rules are different for every state, and second, that the fat lady has not finished singing her tune yet. So it could all come crashing down and I could be out a fair amount of cash if something goes wrong. The trick for my state was purchasing a Surety Bond for the car at twice the cars value.

We have the same type of thing here in Colorado. They basically inspect the VIN, run a background to make sure it's not stolen, make you post a bond and then give you a title. If it does not come up stolen in something like year then you are good to go moving forward.

Exactly!! You have to prove the car is legally yours to purchase the bond. Here it is 3 years though

SWEET!!!! Good luck with this! I think this is a project worth taking on for sure! Even if it is "only" a repair vs a restoration at least it is ONE MORE GTS saved from the scrap heap and later if someone wants to pull it apart and do a FULL ON resto, then more power to them!

My hat is off to you for taking this gamble and I hope it pays off in spades for you!

So, you tell the state that the title is lost and cannot be replaced. You then pay a surety bond and as long as no one asserts or the state does not find a prior claim on the car within three years, then you are free and clear? You also hope that the state does not find out about the prior COD?

I thought surety bonds were just to safeguard against stolen vehicles or vehicles with liens against them.
