GT Cam Damage - Endless Spending

Seems the GTS just doesn't want to come back from the dead.
After years of downtime and some very poor work performed on the engine years ago, I found that there were aluminium shavings from the heads (not cleaned after shaving) in the oil. So I bought a replacement engine, the one from Aspkiller's GT racecar, formerly owned by ErnestSw. $5,500 was totally worth it to me, as I was so tired of dealing with repeated expense and just never getting to drive my car. So I've installed a pan spacer and ob oil pickup, painted the intake and cam covers and did a lot of cleaning up. Today as I was about to instal the new cam covers, I for the first time pulled the cam covers off that had come with the GT motor. Here are 2 of the lobes. |

Did my yearly oil change today, Mobil 1 Delvac 5W40. I noticed some magnetic material on the pickup. It was not a solid piece or pieces, but seemed to be compacted powder in consistancy and there was probably a quarter of a pencil eraser in volume.

I feel your pain, good side is that the 928 is worth some pain.

Sorry to see this happen to such a nice guy. Was there any evidence of trouble when you took off the pan? Where are you going to go from here?

That's not good. Using 5W40 sure didn't help.

I still don't understand why anyone would think it is okay to run 5W40 oil in a 928, it's just such a waste to see damage like this :(

Argh, really sorry to see this H. :crying: Exhaust lobes? I'd forgotten the part about this having been a street car before Lairry's ownership, but of course it was a street car first. Duh.
In lieu of the time and money to get those welded, or getting new cams from Porsche, Colin, or Mike S., and given your ultimate plans for the engine, might the expedient solution be to swap in the GTS cams, get it squared away paperwork-wise, and then stick the blower on it? I have no idea what kind of hp difference GT vs. GTS cams is worth given X amount of boost, but once you're above 400 rwhp, who cares? :) |
was that really oil related ? was it an automatic. running too low of revs?
ive seen that before , but it was on a neglected auto. how does head shavings get in the oil?? WTF??? heads are shaved and then cleaned, right??? ouch! not good. BUT they can be saved! ;) |
can you just grind the base circle and take off the damaged area from the lobes?

Pretty typical I'm afraid.
I can have them touched up with a slightly better grind put on. They will be as good as new. Price is $700 will take 2-3 weeks plus shipping, or you will need to arrange pick-up/delivery. |
Ouch! ... sorry to hear of your misfortune Heinrich.
I hate to mention it, but in light of the knowledge of the light oil use, and the damaged cam lobes, you really need to check bearings .... :( |
