Default Did your 86.5 come with a red or silver rim emergency spare tire?

I have read, or heard that both fit, or that the silver will only fit over the rear calipers, or that the correct spare is the red wheel due to the S4 brakes. However, I've seen the silver rim in some 86.5+ cars (even an S4) and a silver rim spare was in my 86.5 when I bought it. The red rim appears to have more outboard "arch space" for big brake clearance with the red one. But was this necessary for the 86.5+ (S4 brakes)?

Necessary, not sure. Both my 86.5 and 87 have the silver rim and it fits.

Thanks Brian. This makes me wonder if the red rim is intended for the GTS.

Three silvers and one red spare. The youngest of the four got the red one.

My 87 has a red spare, I've never tried to see if it fits. It look like it's never been out of the car.

GTS red spare is different than S4/GT red so that it fits around big black front calipers. 5½x16" vs 5½x15".

Per chance does the part number on your silver-spare rim start with 951? I interpreted this as "944 Turbo".

Yup...if I only knew how to do a poll. Seems there was a period between 86.5 and sometime in 87 when opening the tire cover in the back of your 928 was like opening Forest's box of chocolates....never know what you're gonna get.

Oops, I didn't see the 85 with red and 88 with silver. Ok...this is getting weirder. We have adopted tires looking for their original parents
