Dealer don't know squat.

Totally a buyers market for what you are looking for, so take your time and find something really nice. But expect a few things:
1) They will pretty much all have weeping oil pan gaskets
2) They will pretty much all have some scraping on the the bottom of the pan
3) They will pretty much all have been jacked under the seat support rails (looks like a frame underneath, but very soft and dents if you just look at it).
4) If you find one without any cracks in the dash or pod that just means that it will crack on pretty much the first sunny day you leave the car parked outside. I was so stoked when I finally bought a crack free dash, had it shipped across the country and installed it. With a week or two in L.A. the cracks started.

David - There are some very trusted people on this board who could look at cars in other parts of the country besides NY/NJ for you--or, who may already know the car. I.e., the Virginia/MD/DC crowd could check out a car--and then you could just make the drive and put eyes on and "do the deed." You'll see those kinds of posts about once a month on this board. It really is a great community.

To the OP, what are your expectations?

Do you plan on doing any of your own repair work? The willingness and ability to do your own repairs plays a huge role in the long term cost of owning a 928.

-We are moving from NYC back to my home state of NC by summer 2012. Once we are in NC we will have much more space and I want to start learning/doing some basic maintenance/repairs.
-while we are in NYC, will be a weekend getaway car. When we move to NC, will be my daily driver.
-I have no space to work on car at home in NYC.
-this shark will be kept in a parking garage in Manhattan until we move.
-I plan to budget about $2,000-$3,000/year for maintenance/repairs (on average).
-I am mechanically inclined but never worked on a Porsche.
-owned 2 Alfa Romeo Spiders in the past and did simple stuff like oil/filter, clean/replace plugs, plug wires, air filter. Also did all electrical and interior work myself such as new convertible top, replacing power window switches, door handles, door panels, stereo and speaker install.

Take note that if you plan on doing alot of you own work you will need a set of manuals your choices are factory originals that can be a bit pricey or CD versions that are available from our suppliers on here.

All things equal, I'd trade a 32V to get a 16V.
4 speed auto definitely should shift crisply, and can be softened to taste, so the above cautionary advice was nonsense.
Even if it slips on the 2-3 shift, showing flare, its generally fixable by dropping the pan and applying a 12 dollar spring kit.

16 V, even auto has plenty of power.

If that 83 you were contemplating was well maintained, and could be had for $6 K or so, that would be a reasonable way to go.

i have never been in a decent 16v car... the ones i drove were pigs.....so my opinions are based on my limited experience with them, but i was very underwhelmed by them.
