Default Came across a WRX STi on the way home

I entered the freeway and looked in the rear view and saw a WRX STi. So we were at about 60mph on a sparsely populated 3 lane road north of Baltimore and I saw him accelerate so I dropped it into 3rd and waited for him as he passed me at about 80mph. He had a little run on me but I hit it in time to be accelerating by the time he came by. I slowly pulled him then moved in front of him and stayed in it to about 140mph. After 120 I really started to pull him and it was about 10 car lengths. Just about right given the STi has 300hp and about the same weight. Right in the sweet spot for the 928. These 928s are such great cars! I get a thrill every time I drive it. Mine is a stock 87 S4 that is well maintained.

Just thought I would share a fun day with you all.

Jeff.

Yep. A good S4 or similar can eat those for lunch. But you have to keep your wits about you, or they will get by you. Nice but fugly little cars.

I doubt that a WRX is near the weight of a 928 - my Liberty/Legacy GT wagon is very close to a 928's mass at 1450kg dry, but the wrx is built on a smaller platform. OOPS, having looked it up, wrong. Early WRX were built on Impreza platform, but since 2008 they have used a shortened Liberty/Legacy base, so they are around the same weight - 1400+ kgs/3100lbs. Stock power is 195kw/260hp (in Oz market trim anyway), but this can be raised quite a LOT with readily available bits. The upside of the weight is they are very stiff. My GTB wagon on Bilsteins gives a very good compromise between around town ride and handling at speed, and with the 6speed box is a real pleasure as a daily driver. Different smiles from those provided by the 928 , but smiles nevertheless.

My Evo X is rated at about 300hp but is geared much differently than my '88 928 was. Try getting your stock 928 to 60mph in a median time of 4.8 seconds, it's going to be tough for sure.

TBH I can't even get to 3rd that fast so race me and I may loose The STI is a quick car as well but not purposed for the same goal as the 928.

FWIW the STi has about simillar specs to the Evo, I guess that Subaru has stepped up their latest gen and can out do the X in some respects.

No need for doubt. Looked it up. Latest (most powerful) is 3373lbs with either 265 or 305bhp.

A turbo boxer engine with variable valve timing gets the power down quick-and the 6 speed ain't bad at all, even with all wheel drive.

I guess all that 4WD stuff adds weight. It sure looks smaller and lighter than 928
