HVAC Fan
I just noticed that my a/c, heater fan does not blow in positions 1,2 or 3. That's in any mode except defrost of course; then it comes on full speed. It also blows full speed any mode in fan position 4,high.
Is there any well known solution for this one?

Daniel,
Sounds like the resistor pack is the problem, not uncomon. I believe that there are several threads on the pack failing and how to salvage one. I would check the relay first. I was about to replace/repair the pack on my 80 Euro S about 2 years ago and decided to check the relay prior to diving in to the pack. The relay was bad took 5 minutes to fix.

most likely you have a bad fan speed resistor pack. it consists of several resistors which are connected in series and the number of resisters the current passes determines the fan speed. if one of the resisters burns out then no current will pas through that resister, and therefore no fan speed setting below the bad resister will work. so if you burn out the first resister speeds 2+ will continue to work. burn outht esecond and you loose 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 will function... high speed (4) bypasses all resistor and therefore usually continues to work.

New resistor pack. It's located on the fan plenum under the plastic cowl cover. Some have had success fiddling with the resistor pack internals. Not me. The resistor pack is not cheap but easy to replace. Put a large screw with a long string into one of the extra holes in the backside backside of the old pack before you remove the two screws that secure it and let it drop into the fan plenum. Through the fan-to-plenum boot opening nearby, fish out the old pack with a long part retriever, attach the screw & string to the backside of the new pack and pull it into place inside the plenum. Should take about 10 minutes this way. WYAIT, try to brush/vacuum/rinse accumulated crap off the evaporator coils visible from the plenum boot opening.

theres 1 fuse but 2 relays you may wnat to check; fuse is 30amp in position 20
relays are # XII and XIV and both are the same most common relay.
then the resistor pack

then the resistor pack

If the fan runs on Position 4 then the fuse and the relay are good. Resistor pack is by far the most likely problem. Splicing high-temp nichrome resistor wire is not an easy job...
