Interchangeability of 928S and 928GT interior parts?
Hi all, a guy I know has just stripped out a VERY low mileage 1991 928GT for the race track. He has removed the entire interior, and I am wondering what parts might slide straight into my 1982 928S Euro A/T.
In particular, do the front seats just bolt straight in? I imagine the electrical connections are dead-simple - it's just power - right?
Does the instrument Pod swap out?
My original seats were about to be recovered, but the seats themselves are not in great interior shape. The GT seats are pristine, but the wrong colour, so I would get those seats, have them recovered (new leather 928 leatherworks covers with a French seam) and then swap.
I'm thinking the floor mats will slide straight in, and possibly the door inserts too.

Seat connections will present some complications for you ... the GT memory seat has a multi-pin connector that goes to a memory controller underneath the seat cushion. If it's a heated seat, there would be wires for the heaters as well. I suspect the seat rails are the same for all years, so would likely bolt in with no difficulty.
The pod is likely different, since it holds a digital dash instrument cluster, and in the US, there is a knee bolster under the dash. Another difference is the GT pod has switches at the bottom for intermittent wipers and interior dash lights (brightness setting). You might not need to hook these up but they are in a different location than the pre-89 cars.

Most everything will fit just fine...
Seats should be fine (electrical will be easy enough if you don't care about memory/heating).
Best leaving the old dash. console may have some differences you will have to workaround - probably do-able. You will need to swap speakers - hopefully it comes with all those altredy mounted?

The seats should be a bolt in, but the wiring will be very very different, depending on what power/heat options the '91 seats have.
Neither the pods itself nor the instrument panel will be interchangeable.
The '91 floor mats have a different molded foam pad on the underside that fits into a mirror image on the floorboard. Not sure if that pattern is present in an 82.
Honestly, a complete, pristine interior from a '91 is (should be?) worth several thousand dollars, including the dash, airbags, steering wheel, etc. Most of the pieces are NLA from Porsche, and they're only original once. If I were stripping out that interior, I'd do it very carefully, photograph the whole thing lying on the driveway, and put it up for sale for at least $3000. Those pieces are largely irreplaceable.
What color is it?

I do it whenever I have the seats out of my cars - just using a benchtop power supply, to make cleaning/greasing the threaded fore/aft rails easier.
From memory, there was a thread back in about 2004 where someone put a full late interior into an early-ish car - I'll have a dig for it.

Thanks for your very quick and detailed replies! I think I will use this 928 forum from now on, as it seems to have many many more users than the other forums I have used for years.
Let me tell you the story. The car was imported some time ago from the US (I think) but it's a left-hooker and as such can't be registered on the road in New Zealand without being converted to RHD. (Has anyone ever converted a 928? It'd be cheaper to buy a new one!)
The original NZ owner did not know he would not be able to register it (100% pure fool) and so he stripped the interior and installed a roll cage, and that was as far as he got. The gentleman who now has it purchased it as-is (for probably next to nothing, I'd say 10K max) and the entire interior is now sitting in a Kombi Van. None of it will be re-used at all.
The new owner has ordered a Stage III supercharger, new suspension, dry sump and other bits and pieces to the tune of about 50K. He has absolutely zero interest in the interior parts, and I doubt he could even be bothered to spend the time to sell the bits. He already has a 996 GT3 cup car, a 968 RS Lighweight, and a 993 Twin Turbo Race car making 800+ BHP - so I don't think he gives two stuffs about what came out of the new race car.
He has, unfortunately suffered a huge loss with the death of his wife this week, and so I will not approach him about any parts at all for at least a couple of weeks.
The interior is Blue - but not the very dark blue like mine: http://4sure.co.nz/temp/928-4.jpg
It's sllightly lighter. Sadly, the seats (while in awesome shape) have a fabric insert between the leather bolsters and believe me when I tell you - it is unbelievably hideous to behold. (That is why I will recover the seats!). The dash pod is the same colour (Blue) while mine is black.
I think I will probably just order a leather pod cover from 928 leatherworks when I want to do mine.
But I have dibs on the best bits for inside my car.
I will enquire about the rest of the interior and have a discussion with him about disposing of the various items which may be of use to you guys here. There's no sense in letting this stuff moulder in the back of a Kombi Van, getting baked and bent.
I'll keep you updated.
