The original defintion was 78-79 cars.. the old buggers. The first iteration of the 928. But that was many years ago when first used prior to Rennlist.

Since OB was our invention, and never anything but that, we can make it what we want ... to me, an old buggar is anything with a 4.5-litre engine.

Of course all things being equal the 79 is the preferred car. There is a 79 on e-bay at the moment in primer - looking at the way the primer was done it is probably covering a lot and making a repaint more difficult - but it is bit to $2500 which is a lot for a $700 car.

There was no S Euro car in 79 so you are looking at a 4.5 in either case. The 80 will get better gas mileage at the expense of performance. The 79 will be close to addictive to drive. Of the 928s I have including the convertible my 78 is by far the most fun and responsive to drive. In addition to the CIS on the 79 is the advantage of less electronics. The door locks are vacuum - not electric. No engine computer.

I believe it was Jay Kempt was the one to start the OB designation for Old Bugger. But I really think it could apply to any 16 valve car. They are pretty much all the same. The big separator is the CIS injection system which was carried forward on the Euro cars until 84.

Thanks for the input.

heinrich, what's your third option...giving them to you or scrapping them and going after a s4 or gts?

My definition of Old Bugger...

You're my boy, Blue!

I'm not sure I understand why?

I would argue the '80 is more pure than the '79.

Many MY80 where "economized" to incluce no rear wiper, no front headlamp washers, no smog pump, no rear console...
One might argue this more purist, but the CIS is missing... which takes away a little from it's "classic" charm.

OTOH, nice improvements in realiability happend btw '79 & '80. L-Jet, electro door locks and climate control.

I'd be interested to know if there's an "economized" 80 Euro/RoW, non-S, with CIS. Sans all listed above, plus no rubstrips or sunroof. That would an interesting one!

See, what I believe will be collectible in the future (or worth saving), is rather nuanced.

And to step out of the Jim Bailey paradigm will really take a special car, with special character. Features, provenance, color, options, originality, low serial numbers, 78MY preferred.

Most others will fall into the JB paradigm, and he'll be able to flap-on about that for years to come.

Regarding the OP's question.... not enough info on either car to make specific judgement.
Generally, re. the two you are looking at. Go with one you like better.

Jadz, I am looking at getting the '80 regardless, just trying to see which one to save at the moment and which will be parts...the '79 is already all mine. And yes I understand not all components will switch

as always thanks all for the input

Jadz, the last part about parts interchange was not slighted towards you, it was preemptive tactical response. I personally like my euro, but sadly it does not move, the '80 us is driveable, possibly not reliable at this point, would really like a 5 sp again...had enough of the dead left foot in all of my cars
