Tail light bulb sockets?
On my newly acquired '89 S4 one of my back up lights is out and one of the tail lights on the other side is also out.
Both of the bulbs looked good, so I cleaned them up on a scotch brite pad & plugged them back in - no go. Next, I tried to clean up the contacts inside the bulb socket with a pencil eraser and the contacts fell out in my hand. The bases of the contacts were completely rusted through (on a California car)!
So, has anyone got a couple of bulb sockets or the short taillight harnesses with the sockets attached lying around? Looks like the bulb sockets are part of the harness. Thanks.

Hey James!
Easy way out, temporary fix is to solder the wires to the bulbs and carry on. BTDT
Next best is to slightly modify (Nissan??) replacement sockets from a jobber. The part numbers are herre on the forum, or if you need them, I can make the trek tot he garage and actually look at a package.
Next step up is to try to source form one of our suppliers used. Usually not available as singles, only as entire harnesses , and not inexpensive.
Last option, mortgage the homestead and order form Porsche. (Full harness only available), and you actually don't want to know what they want retail for it.

I thought someone had sourced sockets from NAPA Autoparts. What I remember it was someone who converted other light sockets to brake lights. You might want to keyword search NAPA and look for that post. You might just take the socket you have down to NAPA and show it to the counter guys.

James, I think I will be performing the brake light mod upgrade later this week or early next week. If you can wait a bit, you can have my old bases for free. Just pay for shipping. https://rennlist.com/forums/928/4551...grade-mod.html 77Tony

Congrats, James! While I can't help you with the sockets, I'm curious to hear more about the car you bought. Do we know the PO? What mileage, color, options, etc? Pictures would be great, too...

The harnesses are available from Porsche but at $200 each side the Nissen Quest alternative is the way to go. I may start stocking a kit for this 8>)

Found the car on CL here in Santa Rosa. PO was unknown to me - said he'd gotten too old and too fat for the car.... Car looked like crap, it'd been sitting outside under a pine tree for years - carpets pulled out and piled in the back seat area, etc. Can't believe someone would try to sell a car without making any effort to clean it up! Last major repair had been done in 2006 and the car had been driven 1,600 miles since then!
In the last 10k miles the car has had:
Fuel Inj Brain
New Battery
Fan Assemblies
Water pump, TB, Thermostat, Radiator, Coolant resovoir, Coolant level sensor
Front shift coupler
A/C compressor, Receiver, Drier
Complete clutch assembly, Rear main seal, resurfaced flywheel
Rebuilt torque tube (from 928 Int'n)
Steering rack, Front of engine reseal
Dist caps & rotors, Cam gear, Valve cover gaskets, Pan gasket
Clutch master & slave cylinders
Primary & high pressure fuel pumps
Black with champagne & black interior. Interior rear quarter panels are trashed, driver's seat bolster is gone, driver's side carpet is trashed, dash and pod are cracked, sun roof only opens half way, wheels are etched, but it's basically a solid car in need of lots of TLC.
Now for the good part - Cleaned up better than I expected & the car drives great, and it's a 5 speed with sports suspension and limited slip! About 113k on the clock. Not quite ready for photo's yet....
