Sunroof adjustment
 

1991 S4.

The front edge of my sunroof is slightly below the level of the roof. The WSM says it can be adjusted by turning the adjustment screw after the hold down bolts have been loosened. I do that and it seems there is no adjustment available in either direction. Am I missing something?

if the front is low,
then the way the adjustment works is that the 2 bars that the front arm pivots on act like a see saw.
I would not be adjusting the 2 big flat head screws that are visible throught the arm.

Rather remove the 2 small screws at each end of the bar add some blue loctite to them
then install them so that they can have the screw closest to the front acting as the lifting screw and the rear screw acting as the tensioning screw.
these screws only need to be position screws they dont get cranked down tight as this will bind the front bar
The flat head screws act as the pivot for the see saw

NOTE both screws wont be screwed in the same amount,
and the arms wont be parallel to the inside of the roof.
if you get this adjustment correct it wont cause binding of the front transit bar,
if the screws are are too tight the front bar will bind

Note the loctite will hold the screws in position,
also put loctite on the 4 screws at the rear of the roof on the transition blocks,
these get set so the they are parallel to the roof when its closed, check the roof height of the roof so its flush with the sunroof

The adjustment screw the WSM suggests can sometimes strip.

...or if you are adjusting it and back it out too far, it will just spin.

As you can see, as you back this shim out, it pushes against the part the sunroof screws into. Once you get the 4 bolts snugged, then you turn that screw counter-clockwise and the front of the roof will raise. It can also be turned clockwise to lower the front of the roof. I always start it off fully screwed in - snug the four bolts and then adjust it by turning counter-clockwise.

Mine stripped and would only back out so far, making the adjustment not work.

I JB welded a nut on it to give it that extra size so it would adjust again....getting a new one in my next parts order......

thanks for posting the pictures as you can see the arm is bent slightly this is from over tightening the 2 securing bolts this will load the front bar and cause it to bind on the tracks,
the bolts only get snugged the loctite will hold them in place

the center height bolt acts as a pivot for the bent bar adjust the bar as necessary to allow the roof to sit at the height you want

I will tell you - it's really hard to straighten that arm out. I've tried everything.

I did manage to get it back to it's somewhat original shape by clamping it on a table and bending, but it awkward. You should have seen how bent they were before!
