It's an odd number any way you slice it. S is for Stuttgart. But typical numbers from that period (press photos of 930s, 924's, 928s) where in the range of S-C* ****

Red plates were and still are dealer plates which can be quickly attached to just about any car which needs to be driven on public roads. In Germany plates are personal. When car is sold seller removes his old ones and buyer gets insurance and new plates from local office. These special red ones have insurance attached to them. This gives freedom to move cars around on public roads without having to do all that paperwork. Porsche factory uses them too AFAIK.

This is just a temporary plate.
Dealers and manufacturers have those for test drives. Private owners can get one for a few days, to move an unregistered vehicle.
I don't get that. Are you talking about the red plates, or the standard ones?
Dealers and manufacturers have red plates that they keep and insure. They have to keep very close tabs on when the plates are used, and on which cars.
Private owners who get red plates need to return them to the German DMV equivalent (Landratsamt) after the loan period, so they can be issued to the next person who needs them.
The regular plates stay on the car as long as it stays registered in the same region or county. If the car is sold within the same area, the plates stay. The only valid reason to change a plate is a safety threat. However, if the car is sold to someone who's residence is in a different region, new plates for that region are issued.

There were 4 white press cars, and I believe #1 was the only one of them to have a rear wiper.

Jim,
Keep up the great work on this car and #6 please and keep us posted!!!
Hey, when are you going to get #295? I can't wait to get that car down here and rolled in to the driving line up!
#51 (of 77, '95 GTS's) is at the shop getting a good once over from my mechanic and getting a few little things tended to! Post deer collision the car looks and performs better than it has in probably a DECADE!! AWESOME! I should have it back in the garage early next week!

But point is that red dealer plates is nothing to worry about. Car in pic can be 0011 with them and later with permanent black plates. Though same red dealer plates can have been used in multible cars so they are not as good indicator what car is in picture than permanent black ones. Black plates were probably almost always used only in one specific car.
