I was just trying to engage into this person's problem. With sympathy (read I'm sorry), and a few questions. Notice how my questions helped him expound to the group his dilema?

What help are you willing to give him, Randy?

Did you say you've tested the ECU on another vehicle since it came back from being repaired? Did you test it, or did someone else do it? Programa Inc tells everyone that the eprom chip was the cause of the problem. I know this from personal experience. When I had trouble with my LH I tried using them. To make a long story short, I pissed away a lot of money and had to go elsewhere to get my problem fixed. They even sent me their "test" LH, and it was no good. Unless you have personally observed your LH start up and operate another 928, take the claims of "it's working" with a grain of salt.

What did the mechanic do to check out the alarm? Did he unplug the alarm module and place a jumper wire on the yellow and black w/red stripe wires? If he didn't, he didn't check the alarm. Doing this takes the alarm out of the equation.

Guys
Finally am getting my car back from the mechanic as he has admitted he can't fix it. He's putting oit back together so I can send it to Dave. Given he had the car for 5 mos.; and, could not repair it, how much is reasonable for he (mechanic) to charge? I've never had a car that was not repaired; so, I am unaware of what type of bill he can present. Thanks

Even though he had the car for 5 months, the real question is how much time did he actually spend working on it?

California has some very assertive laws for car repair. NC not so much. Might be worth doing some homework, deep and quick, including determination if any agency in Raleigh has licensing power and what criteria might be in place. Determine, too, the criteria needed for shops to file mechanic's liens, even after taking delivery.

Have counterarguments prepared, and prepare your version of the timeline for your own use.

Be prepared, lawyer-up prior if you can, just to be safe. Not looking for a fight, but looking to protect yourself from unreasonable behavior, should it arise.

Am operating off of your earlier comment somewhere where the shop owner said "think of all I could charge you for time" or some such thing. That was your early warning signal to at least do research.

What did you ask them to do? What did the represent they would do? What did they agree to do? What did they actually do?

I think the most you would owe would be for parts replaced, and flat rate for their replacement. I would add figuring that out to the list Chris supplied above of the prep you can do. And on a negotiation front, keep it all very friendly and sympathetic, even after you have done all the prep. Maybe the mechanic will just do the right thing and bite the bullet himself. If not, you're ready.

Check for +12V at the injectors when cranking.
If you dont have that then they will not fire.

Bridge the LH, EZF, and Fuel pump relays.

Are you sure that you are getting a good spark?

Put an oscilliscope onto the LH plug and verify that it is getting a good crank signal.
I have seen a tach go out and causing the signals to the brains to get all screwed up.
This will show up though with a oscilliscope.

I recommend taking it to a pro. I have yet to have a stockish car that isnt running that I cannot get running, or find the problem in under one day! So get it to someone who knows wtf they are doing!

Thanks guys,
I'm dealing with the mechanic tomorrow as the car is back together and still not running. I basically asked him to get the car running via diagnostics and repair. He has been vague regarding all that he has done other than replacing the crank reference, cleaning the grounds, diagnosing electrical connections, checking the alarm and sending the ECU off for repair. I'm hopeful he will do the right thing; however, I do have an attorney (my brother) if needed.

^^These are the common things we address to get one running.
Generally takes a few days if its done systematically, often less by a pro.

The ECU (LH) was rebuilt too early for a price far above the typical rebuild price of $350-$400 or so plus shipping.

Hi Guys,
Just an update on my 86.5 928S that won't start because of a mysterious electrical problem. I finally have the car back at my house and have called 928 Specialists in the hope that Dave will show pity on this poor soul and take a look at it when he has time.
Just wanted to thank you all for your advice and input. According to the mechanic that worked on the car, he tried everything you all recommended. I had to pay just for the parts he installed, no labor. It has a rebuilt ECU and I am hopeful that the experts up at 928 Specialists will be able to pin point the problem. I've been without my 928 since January and am in total 928 withdrawal (I know you guys know the feeling). The lucky part is I live only about 30 miles from 928 Specialists.
Have a great weekend and again, thanks for all the support and assistance. Maybe next year I'll be able to drive it to the October Sharkfest!!

Matthew, not to hijack your thread but we have a get-together going on next weekend at DR's place: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ecialists.html

If you're only about 30 miles away, perhaps you might want to attend (928 or not) to meet up with some of us and get an introduction to 928 Specialists and Dave & Jeannie! And if you intend to have Dave ulitmately working on it, that is a reasonable & easy tow for a AAA membership... but that would be between you & Dave.

Show up if you can, even if just for the camaraderie! I have added you to our NC owners list as well...

First, thanks for the invitation. It would be wonderful to meet fellow 928 owners in the area as I've slowly learned you all are actually a very active group in NC/VA with great camaraderie.
But, unfortunately next weekend is like the only weekend I'm not free.
My best friend from Chicago is coming down to a conference at the Four Seasons in Greensboro and we're getting together that whole weekend to goof off, watch sports and eat bb-cue. I've not seen him in ten years.
So, I'm really sorry - and, bummed as I would really like to make some new friends with similar interests and 928's are very much an interest of mine.
I would love to be part of any group you guys have and would be able to make the next meeting if it's a regular type of thing. That would be great.
Is this a monthly sort of club or informal group? Doesn't really matter, if I know the next date, I'll be there. I could be at any others except this weekends.
I'm looking forward to meeting Dave and Jeannie and the rest of the committed 928ers.
I've talked with Jeannie twice, she's been so supportive and just lovely on the phone. She talked to me this last time for at least 20 minutes!! Not many people would take that kind of time - a good soul.
If you have the time, keep me abreast of your next get together.
Also, if you need the Serial for my 928 for your registration; or, any other particulars about the car, I can easily send that to you. I am getting ready to cover it in my driveway.
Thanks again White Lightnin', I look forward to meeting you as well as everyone else that gets together.
