You mean you can only get 148K tops out of these things??? Geez, they're just 21 years old, just broken in good...
Yeah, I figured that but its good to get confirmation from you experts here.
So now I order more parts and continue on with the dissassembly. I just wish they were cheaper than they are.
Mr. Merlin, as I get these covers off I'll see about that crank gear too. Hope its a bit cheaper than the cam gears.
Thanks guys!

Buy all four gears and start over fresh.

Although the crank gear is made of steel, it gets the wear pattern from the aluminum gears worn onto its surface. If you don't replace it, it immediately transfers that worn pattern onto the new belt, which then transfers the wear to the brand new gears.
Buy all four gears and start over fresh.

Good to know Greg, thanks for your continued sharing of the knowledge you have learned over the years about these cars, that you freely give us, not just to me, but to the whole of the 928 community.

That is exactly what my wifes '90 oil pump gear looked like. I kept getting a loose belt warning so I'd go in, check it, adjust and then a week later the same thing would pop up. The cam gears were perfect so I decided to jump in and just tear it all down. That is what I found. Nasty

Now, those are getting bad. I've seen a couple of threads where someone recoats old gears....
Mark Anderson actually had one gear that had worn so much that you could see air through the bottom tooth groove.
I think because it was so light in weight, we used it on a race engine....

I always just put a straight edge on the crank gear and if I can see any light past it I replace it, never thought about a transference of wear patterns.

My shop here in Germany says duplicating this gears is very difficult because Porsche use a special divider for the tooth on the gears.
He has a very talented business partner in the metal tool fabrication business who told him so.
