Take it to someone that knows how to work on cars. They will be able to do a quick look and check the basics.

First you might do well to install a new set of plugs try Bosch 7900 at autozone that crosses to a WR7DC. check the gaps and install them .

Take a wrench and check the bolts on the cam tower covers. these could be leaking oil down onto the manifolds.

At this point it might be a good idea to take the car to someone thats familiar with the 928 as a diagnosis will quite possibly be more forthcoming

the intake manifolds getting hot fast, and the burning smell coming from them. There is a place across town I could take it that has a good history of working on Porsches, and knows the 928.

I don't think it would really be safe to drive cross town with this burning smell though?

Do you think that oil could have got into the manifolds? I will note that I haven't driven this much since I bought it from the guy in November 2009. Would old sitting oil have any cause?


Edit: I just checked the Coolant Reservoir, and it is gone. All I could notice was a little tiny stream of coolant that seems to have come from the lower radiator hose, and a drop of coolant ontop the timing belt.

I also found where a bunch of oil is and where the oil leak is. I'll post up some pictures soon.

first the intake getting hot doesnt make sense,
there is nothing in there to make it get hot and this getting hot could be a subjective thought,
did you take a temp reading with and IR gun?

If your loosing coolant then you most probably have a leak somewhere, if you pulled out all the plugs and they looked like the first 3 then you dont have a leaking head gasket into the cylinders,

now a HG could be leaking from around the perifery of its seal along the block edges, evidenced by a white crusty deposit usually along the V area.

You could also take out the intake barn door and inspect the intake for a small puddle of oil inside it.

If your not really sure of any of this then it would be best to get another set of eyes on the situation before more damage is created.

If they fit your screen or not has very little to do with the size,
They are 3200x2400, I was just shocked that you would put them up just like they come out of the camera with out resizing them.

And yes, it does take a long time on DSL to load each picture, enough that I do not want to look at a second one.

One thing I will say is that you are going to need to get that engine clean to find the leaks.

If you have got a engine leaking like that and have done any work on it, then it takes a few minutes for the oils to burn off the exhaust manifolds.

On a possible head gasket issue, do a chem check, while looking at the plugs will show a bad leak, it will not show small ones.

And at best a chem test will only give you a positive on a leak if it is big enough to change the fluid, I have seen several that would not leak until under heat and load, which is impossible to do with that tester.

from the pictures posted I would first go to the backs of each cam tower,
and see if the bolts are loose on the rear covers,
if so then the cork gaskets are probably both bad, Roger sells new silicone rear tower gaskets,

next would be to snug up the oil pan bolts,

Then the oil fill canister mount bolts should also be checked for tightness remove the screen and tighten the one in the bottom of the canister as well as the 2 outer bolts

How do you know there is coolant on the timing belt?

Some of the stuff you are witing makes no sense. Have someone that knows the basics of working on cars (any car) look at it, before you end up breaking something important.

You are all over the place with your posts - answer the questions that MrMerlin and others are asking - like the intake temperature, or the suggestions like take out the "barn door" and look for oil, or tell us where you see the coolant leak - the timing belt is behind the front cover and would be darn near impossible to see, so do you mean the fan belt, perhaps?

BTW, I read your 928 blog, it's obvious you are passionate about your car, and we are here to help you.... help us with more, accurate, info.

I'm doing what is suggested, but I do not have a whole bunch of time in a day to do several suggested things. I'll be taking the 928 in tomorrow to a mechanic that knows and deals with older Porsches, and see what they have to say there.

...and if he doesn't know the 928 very well, you may be no better off, unfortunately. As others on here will tell you, knowing the 924, 944 or whatever doesn't help much, and knowing the 911 or 914 means nothing....
